Sidestand vs centerstand interference.

Hi Guys,

Like many of you, I installed a Kawasaki sidestand kit on my Laverda.

It is perfect exept for the fact that you need to cut the lever of the centerstand when installing it making the centerstand very difficult tu use.

My solution has been to weld a big nut on the remains of the centerstand lever so I can now use a big ratchet to rotate it.

Welding on an old socket to have the square drive would also work, I tought of it after...

I have the same problem, getting old and cut the tang off completely, I never use the centre stand unless at home (using a second hand to help) or some special place, (like maybe a ship) where there is always a second hand to help me get on the stand.

I like this solution, in order to rotate the stand when at home and on the work ramp, I may well introduce something similar, at some point, I had in my head to weld a pair of stops small enough to wheel the bike straight over, but big enough  just to stop the metal on metal skidding and then use a 50mm ratchet strap to winch the bike onto the stand
this is a good tip, many thanks
CLEM

Sorry but i'm struggling with this too  :(  how do you steady the bike then operate the ratchet to get it on the stand, must be a knack to it or very awkward,no?

Am i alone in not really understanding this? In order to use the centre stand you have to take a ratchet with you??

Well your not on your pat there I can tell ya.

I'm struggling to understand why anyone would take a perfectly good functioning centre stand and bugger it up in the first place.

Also can someone please explain what a Kasaki is never heard of one.  (bolt)

If you modify the stand mounting bracket as shown in the links, you should get both stands operating correctly. Well worth the effort!

It sounds like one of those race stands that seem to need at least 2 people to use or risk having the bike fall over. For all the effort of welding on a nut wouldn't it take the same effort to cut and weld so both can work together?Or do the mod in post 2 above. At least that's possible. After lots of effort fitting a Cagiva Alazzurra sidestand , Pantah by another name, they both swing in the same ark so one must fold past the other to use either.

I used the sidestand for a long time as the only stand for the bike, never had an issue with that. However, I also never had an issue using them together: simply flip out the sidestand first, get off the bike and while you still have the sidestand out, put the bike on the center. Then flip the sidestand back in - all good.

If you first put in the sidestand and then the centerstand, the centerstand lever can be bent to fit around the sidestand. If you want to put the sidestand out, you push the centerstand down, too (a bit) and once the sidestand is 45? out, the centerstand flips back into its riding position. No issue...  ::)

Yes, you have to put the bike on the centerstand then, flip in the sidestand and the center afterwards, else it stands out to much for cornering. I got used to it quite fast and used the sidestand only for getting off the bike easier. Had the 1000 SFC fall off the sidestand twice, never trust a sidestand eversince...

There is a bit of fouling for mine it depends on what order i close - in both cases its a light touch on either - has caused no issue - but i would'nt be without the side stand or the centre stand  - if the centre stand is first there is no fouling - if i want the centre stand i just flick the side stand out and lift onto the centre stand - the Kawasaki stand kit from Joe is 100 times safer than the Corsa suicide stand

(hahaha)

Best description! I am considering putting this on the 1000 SFC stand in black letters... (sidestand is golden). Or a warning sign: "Don't use without standing left side of the bike, both hands on the bars! Don't use with running engine! Best - don't use at all!"

Is Joe still around, doing these kits, does anyone know?  I tried to contact him a few months back, but got no reply ....

Better to just take it off if you are that worried, mine is there for originality sakes ( dont want the rivet counters marking me down) but it never gets used.

Luckily i can use both stands too and wouldn't be without my Kawa side stand, its certainly an essential addition in my books for safer dismounting :D
I also fitted a grub screw into the mounting bracket allowing me to adjust the resting height of the stand away from the silencers. (bigthumb)

Nice touch.
I Araldited a small rubber bung for the same purpose but it soon fell off.

Yes Joe is very much still about - please send a message again or Laverda riders on FB  - has his hands full of a misbehaving old Beemer but he 's always around

Hi and yes Im here.
I can be easily contacted for supply of the side stand kits.

I  bought mine from Jim Bush . I initially took off the main stand but elected in the end to refit it so that wheel removal and chain maintenance could be easily carried out when touring.

Rather than cutting off the whole of the mainstand tang, I just removed an inch of it ie enough to prevent the fouling but enough to enable me to operate the mainstand.
It works..perfectly.

Mine needed adjusting the other way to make it tuck in closer to the exhaust. A bit of grinding necessary.

I've seen solid metal ones (off ZZR110) that stick out more than the tubular ones (off ZX6R).
I have a ZX6R type.
