Drip, drip, drip. Fuel Taps?

I seem to be suffering from increasing numbers of leaking fuel taps.

Today, going into the workshop, the fresh smell of fuel was again evident. Traced it this time to a tank which was off the bike. No sign of leakage when the tank was on the bike, but the tap is slowly seeping fuel.

This is the third tap replacement this year.

Is this another symptom of "modern" fuels?

Anyone else having problems?

...Anyone got a cure?

H.

Me , have changed fuel taps for new ones some 2 years ago. Was not driving Jota for cuple months, few days ago started engine and it was prity strong pissing on right fuel tap. I have closed this one and drive around with only one. In an hour or so i tryed few times each time fuel run out on motor block and than it stoped. It seams it is tight for now.
Why is this heppening ?.

hi hay, yes it is the modern fuel , my motodd leak over last winter and ha presto a battery with no cover on it, the shit fuel also eats plastic.
have started to drain the carbs and tank and put it in the car  >:D

think to do this too

I've noticed over the last couple of years that the left hand tap on the SFC weeps slightly when first you turn it on if it's been sat unused for a couple of weeks. After a short time it stops dripping - so I just need to use the thing regularly in the season & remember to go the long way round to the MOT station

Exactly the same symptom on my RGS, but in my case its a matter of wear and tear. Solved by ordering a new set from Wolfgang. They are going on this weekend.

Hope things aren't 'crackling' too much around your neck of the woods Ian :o

Have you already tried to retighten the nut around the lever?
Andy has internal gaskets for the cube-type taps:

Maybe Wolfgang stocks them, too?

It's an age thing... I drip more than I used to, and I can't seem to get my nuts tight enough either!

I wonder of Wolfgang has a repair kit in stock....

Can you get fuel Taps that have Viton seals fitted?
They are supposed to be modern fuel proof.........

Andy

I'm not sure it's fuel related. I have no problem with any taps on my Laverdas ranging from 1951 to 76 or on my 90 Gilera.

Is it an all metal BAP tap or the original style with the plastic handle?
The BAP taps come with a plastic washer between tap and tank instead of the standard fibre washer. I replace them with fibre washers as I have found it difficult to get a proper seal there some times.

The washer inside the tap is a complicated shape so it would be unlikely there would be a Viton replacement off the shelf.

Same happened on my Motodd when I parked it for 3 months to work in Hong Kong. Came back and my almost new Odyssey battery had a hole eroded on the top where the fuel tap leaked all that time. I fitted a Pingle tap to my new carbon tank so that shouldn't happen again!! Also when I designed the battery/electrical box I included a dished lid to catch any fuel spills when disconnecting the hoses.

i have a set of the plastic handled taps in my cellar, came off my hailwood almost 30 years ago. they started leaking quite quickly and seemed to be a problem for everyone that had them - replaced with all metal guzzi taps which are still on the bike today, now, sadly in other hands.

Took my Alpino out for a spin for the first time in about a month yesterday and noticed a smell of fuel when I put it back in the garage. Sure enough there was a small pool of fuel under it this morning .... If anyone knows of anyone stocking new taps / internal seals please let me know

LJ-2, on this Forum, should be able to sort you out with a set of new ones.

One of my new LJ taps had a tendency to leak - I discovered that the contaminants in my tank (very fine metal filings!) must have been getting between the viton seal and the tap body. I ended up fitting the longer reserve taps anyway and lnow that the filings are gone the eaks have disappeared, but it's worth pulling your tap apart (very simple job) and cleaning it all up. The leak only manifested itself when the fuel hose was removed, so somehow leaking past the 'off' position - which also means that the tap wasn't really 'off' when parked.
