120 cam chain fitting

Hi,

I am about to refit the SFC1000 crankshaft and have a new (Wolfgang supplied) cam chain to put on the sprocket first.  What could guide me to getting the chain in the right orientation?  This is the first time I have done this and the manual does not give any guidance.  I was thinking of having both ends of equal length with the centre conrod at TDC - would that put the ends in approximately the right place for final linking up later on?  I guess the chain could be repositioned later with the lower guide removed if the alignment proved incorrect?

As always, all advice much appreciated,

Thanks, Andy

I build them up and put the camchain in later, saves a lot of messing around when the barrels and head are fitted. No.1 Piston is on the left not the centre.
When the motor is in one piece but before fitting the cams lay it on its side and fit the chain using a couple of bits of wire to pull it through.

I fit the chain last after head and barrels are on
with motor standing right way up, I drop one end of the chain down the front of the motor, work out imaginary length to join over cams and tie the exhaust side off to the front engine mount
then I roll the engine over on its end so its bum is up, fish the chain out the cam chain guide hole in the bottom of the engine
attach a length of TIG wire to the loose end, feed the wire through the engine
pull chain through, remove wire, tie off
use torch to make certain chain is in place on lower sprocket
fit cam chain guide
roll engine back over
fit cams
join chain
piece of piss
