1979 Jota 180 indicator problem

Where did the word mini come from anyway?

I definately like mini skirts but not on fat birds.   :D

Its from the Latin - Minimus (who was bullied badly by Maximus).
BL presumably saw humour in having a Mini and a Maxi in their range (although in that case the Maxi was a bit of a softy)

Have been using one of these, seems to work really well and it doesn't make any difference to the rate if you use bulbs or LEDs. Might be worth trying if you want to reduce power eventually. See my thread on LED indicators.

Stick with bulbs if you want your dash indicator to keep working without mods though.

Note for this flasher you need to add an earth from the E terminal to ground.

You can actually tune those crappy little rectangular flasher units. They're dead simple inside. Bend the little tangs to open up the box and have a look. It's just a little piece of kinked metal that heats up when a current is passed through it (not even a bi-metallic element). As it warms up the kink changes shape and it bends away from the contact to break the circuit, then it cools down, returns to its original shape and makes contact again ... ad infinitum.

All you need to do to adjust the flash rate is tweak the little piece of bendy metal. With a bit of trial and error you should be able to get a sensible flash rate with incandescent globes. I don't like your chances with LED's though, unless you put in a dummy load resistor.

Or you could do what Drikko did and spend $4.99 on a new relay.

Cheers,
Cam

Well this comes in a bit late - but having just lost the indicators on my series 1 Mirage and quickly traced the fault to a knackered unit (it was 32 years old),  I have to say that Motalia in UK came up with an original replacement flasher unit for ?11.88 plus Vat.
I thought that was very reasonable. It was posted the same day I ordered it online too.

I stole one off my old CB900 FZ 1980. It is round and so fits in the holder nicely and makes the winkers wink.

It cost me ? zero.  However I'm sure your flasher is so much flasher than mine ; )
