500 gear change

So, I hear the gear change is supposed to be excellent on these Laverda. Well my 500 sometimes doesn't want to change down. Specifically if I have to go down say three gears reasonably quickly, the first gear change will be fine, then occasionally the next gear change the gear lever will appear to be doing nothing, after a few prods it will suddenly select the next gear. This only happens on down shifts. Another few facts - the gear lever is the standard lever i.e. not rear set, I always blip the throttle on downshifts, I do know how to change down gear, the gear lever does return to the resting position (i.e. it is stuck down), it just doesn't seem to do anything.
Any ideas what I should be looking for?
 
Only 500 based bike I have ridden in the last 30 years is my Atlas and it's smooth changing gear.
Sounds like yours is out of adjustment or possibly the selector drum tensioning spring (if same as triples) is broken. I had that once on a 1200 and it gave a similar sounding issue as you describe
