500 oil change question

As it is raining today I decided to change the oil in my bike. This is my first oil change on a Laverda so I made sure I read my workshop manual first.
In the manual it tells me that when I remove the oil filter with the sump plate I should "Note the position of the cam chain sheet bracket in order to refit it in the right place and the right way round, during reassembly."
The illustration in the manual shows something between the oil filter and the engine cases.

However, when I removed my filter, there was no sign of this bracket.  Also, the sump plate appears to my untrained eye to be completely symmetrical. So how can I refit it the wrong way round ?

Confused.

There is normally a metal extension on the top of the filter unit which is this "cam chain bracket". The curved part of this bracket is simply to keep the cam chain from dropping off the crank when the chain is apart for routine maintenance. Looking at a handy empty set of 500 cases here it looks like the filter assembly can only be intalled front to back and there's not enough clearance to install it with the bracket sideways. If your filter unit is missing this bracket for whatever reason then it doesn't matter.

Ah Ha.
Thanks Tom. Now I understand. It wasn't really clear from the picture that this cam chain bracket was a part of the filter assembly.  As you guessed, mine doesn't have this piece. It does however have a metal shroud over the top half of the assembly, which is another mystery.

I see why you are listed as a "Hero Member".

Cheers, Richard.

Hi Richard,
should be something like this, although this one is from an Atlas and slightly different from the 500 one.
