500 project

I have collected parts for my 500 racer project for a while but there is still some lose ends.
My plan is to build up a Barcelona look alike.
So far I have all the molds for the sfc body work, Marvic Camagnolo replica wheels, Maxton 35 mm front fork, Yss rear shocks, enginine is under rebuilding (still below 500 cc) with Carrillo, HC pistons S1 cams etc.
I might make the tank a bit shorter to get a good riding position, it will not be a strictly replica.
I?m still looking for nice 260mm discs with alloy carier (non floating), electronic tacho which lokks like the old racing Veglias.
Another queston is the tripple clamps. The original ones have quite a lot ofset wich means short trail wich could mean intability at high speeds. Is it a god Idea to replace the tripple clamps with obes with less ofset and more trail?

Hi Thomas,

in my racing 500 I've mounted a M1R fork which has triple clamps with much less offset than the original ones, almost flat.
It is indeed much more stable at high speeds, but that might also be a credit to the 40,7 mm legs.
Steering however is much heavier through short turns. I'm still considering of having new clamps made with a little bit more offset.

Hello Hans!
I do have M1R as well, both 38mm and 41,7 with clamps. I'm not allowed to use fork with extern adjuster.
I went for the 35mm fork to keep the bike as light as possible. I have Marzocci and Ceriani 38mm standard fork also wich might be an uppgrade together with 280 mm brakes.
The 500 tripple clamp have more offset than the ones for the tripple wich have more than the ones for the 41,7mm M1R.

Thomas ,
I have found that 22mm offset works well and should give you approximately 100mm of trail.

Thomas,

good to have the S1 Cam, maybe you fancy bigger valves too, my 500 is getting 27,5mm exhaust and 30,5mm intake.
Valves are from the newer twins, Atlas, 650 etc..
Piet can give you more insight as he's doing it...
Cheers jens

I would stick with std valve sizes on a std 72mm bore, you wont gain much & may have problems with the inner exaust ones hitting the liner.
Shallow offset yolks are a big improvement, I have a set off an LH250 on my Monty.

Ross.

Thanks for the input. I will defentky look into the treipple clamps. I tried a few versions when I builded my Mirage back then but as usual I dont have any dokumetation from that.
The valves and guides are good so I leave them for now. I will just clean up the ports.

Any Idea where to get 260 mm discks with alloy carrier?

Maybe at Stein-Dinze, I found my 320 discs for my 500 there:

Being a bit busy preparing my bikes for a couple of track days at Misano in two weeks. I will start to check the tripple clamps.

In know that the 500 wheel is only 2,15" rear compared to 2,50" on the tripple (rear). Are all the other measures the same as the tripple wheels?

What other than original cush drives are people using?
I have to make hubs for the Camagnolo relplicas as well for a set of dymags and a set of astralites so I thought a lighter option would be nice. I?m also thinking of using the later 6 bolt pattern used on Zane's, Duc's and Yamaha disk fit though it looks as I have to make up some 260mm disks anyway. The dymags allreday have that pattern also.

No.

The bearing spacing is different, will not allow the stock brake arrangement to fit.  Done the mod twice, long time ago but I remember it being quite a hassle.

I'll have to dig out a set of tripple wheels to compare with then.
Little details as this (the hubs and cush drive) will probably need a couple of hours.

You might need more than a couple of hours...not to mention a big lathe!

Well, I do have an old but descent lathe. Sadly nothing bigger than 15" will go in. However, making hubs for the Campagnolo or Astralites does not require the complete wheel in the lathe.
On the other hand, once I have decided what discs etc. I want to use I might leave the job to a workshop with an nc lathe.
