5th gear problem

I have a '72 SF 750 that won't stay in 5th gear (false neutral).  Many tries at adjustment of the concentric has produced no positive results.  Any ideas?

Thanks,

If the motor has just been re-assembled - it may well be that the ring that the selector moves to engage top gear is round the wrong way. - Regards - Phil

Until recently I mistakenly suspected that the clutch was slipping in 5th.  I got a momentary slip at speed (just a fraction of a second) in 5th only.  After renewing the springs with 1/8" spacer for more tension, new friction plates and lightly sandblasting the steels, the grip was excellent!  When I road tested it, it popped out and stayed out.  It goes back in but won't stay.  I went to the other side and adjusted the concentric but it seems that it isn't turning the shaft far enough for a reliable engagement.  I am thinking that the fingers that turn the shaft are worn.  What should be the distance between the fingers at the rounded part?  I could add a little weld and re-machine if necessary.

The shift mechanism is not designed to keep the gearbox "in gear", that is the task of the selector drum and the spring-loaded indexing lever.

Has the engine been reassembled recently?  If so, the most probable cause would be the incorrect installation of the 5th gear selector ring, as Phil has already suggested.  This allows 5th to be engaged, but slight pressure from the drive train can push it out of engagement as the dogs only mesh about 2mm,and are usually rounded in that area as well.  When correctly installed, the dogs engage at least 6mm, and will stay put no matter how rounded the edges are.

Another cause could be bent shifter forks.  If this condition has prevailed for considerable time, the fork may be either bent or very worn from the constant sideways pressure it has been inflicted to.

Reckon Maurice is right with the open-heart surgery comment... :D

Could it be caused by a broken selector drum tensioning spring?
When one went on my 1200 it gave gear selection problems in 4th and 5th.
