Repaired/pulled apart/lost one shim: the starter motor over the weekend on the 750 GTL. As been sunday no chance to buy new brushes. So made do with the originals which are not completely stuffed.
But will need to be replaced in future.

So can anyone tell me the Bosch part number for the brushes? and who may have them?

The other item changed was the Bosch mech/elec voltage regulator model number AD.1.14V with a Bosch electronic RE57. Paid $50 AUD from Motohansa.

Works a treat charges at 14.3 volts.

When the brushes went on the RGS starter I took it to my local friendly auto electrician and he managed to get some to fit with a bit of modifying. They've worked perfectly ever since. Cheap as chips as well.

The usual suppliers (Wolfgang or Paradies) will have brushes if you don?t have a friendly auto elec to help out. The starter is ND and not like any car item if I remember correctly.
The regulator reference is irrelevant to us with std dc generator.

Took a Ducati Pantah starter motor to local auto elec looking for brushes, he soldered some species of Nissan brushes on. Good as gold. 40 bucks.

Thanks guys will check first with local auto elec. he has thing for R90S,s and luv,s a challenge .

Interesting the starter has no number , brand on it from what I could see, but is well made.

Just assumed it was Bosch. Nippon Denso it is then.

Well it is a ex police/army 1976 750 GTL but where it came from is a mystery.

The guy I brought it from here in Aus told me it was ex Libyan army bike. Some guy he new travelled  through north Africa and brought up old bikes.

He got it in England in 1985 and shipped it and two container loads of bike from England to Aus , mine was one of them . So the story goes.

When i brought it in 86 it looked like it had been used for target practice and spare parts.

So as they say never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
I have no idea really where it came from, but would welcome any suggestion on how to find out.

Steve,

Looks to be one of the so-called Kuwati police models - very late in the piece and with some mods like the AC alternator added to the front.  Take good care of your alternator belt drive cover - it looks like a normal SF item but is 20mm or so longer from what I've been told.  Rare as hens teeth at a guess.

Cheers

Out of curiosity (GTL)Steve, what's the frame number of your bike?

Mine (#17936) saw service in the Kuwait police force, but obviously not normal police duty as it did not have any of the heavy-weight electricity extras.  Am suspecting display riding as it was fitted with solid rear struts instead of shocks.  A friend owns an alternator equipped GTL with #17937(!), that bike went around the corner from Breganze to Bassano del Grappa and never left Italy till it came to Germany.  It ended up in the possesion of the Bassano Police Chief, pictured in Tim Parkers book, Italian Motorcycles.

Ernesto, Steve, not all alternator GTLs were exported to the mid-east.  And yep, the alternator type belt cover is quite special.

The frame number 19548. So near the end of the line.
When I got it home under the seat was stamped 1976. Also had some brackets welded on the front guard where lights or siren was mounted, back yard job .

Yes the cover is longer ,only found this out when I start looking at replacing it with the standard one. Cover and the plate between the gen and cover where longer. So would need to buy these as well as the original gen.

Gave up , the gen works well anyway, and starts charging at around 1000rpm. The original one starts at 2000/2500 if believe. So battery is looked after.
Like to find out where it come from thou.

Thanks Steve.

My generator starts charging around 1200rpm, good enough for stock electrical equipment.

Have you found brushes for the starter?  I think I still have a couple of NOS brush plates complete with brushes, springs, etc, kicking around.
