750sf3 Oil Pump

I am presently rebuilding a 750 engine from a 1976 SF3, the Green Book mentions when reassembling the Oil Pump to Line up markings on the oil pump driven gears, I am unable to find any markings on the 'Gears', there were marks for lining up the drive shaft of the pump. What difference does it make if the Oil Pump Gears are the same size and same number or teeth?
Also I am concerned on initial starting How to be sure the Oil Pump is functioning, that is delivering adequate oil supply around the engine, since the pump isn't emersed in oil sump. Is it possible to prime the pump then put engine into 4 or 5th gear and turn rear wheel until oil can been seen getting up through rocker covers
Thanks

Hi Skeeta
This has been brought up many times on the forum, just recently in fact.
Just do a search, 750 oil pump location, for example. Truckloads of info on here.

its not the gears inside the pump that you have to align, but the ones on the external drive gear, because downstream of that it also drives the ignition cam (s)

As per the previous post from Clem.

Re oil flow, you can remove one of the cam end covers and run the starter without plugs fitted. Doesn't take long for the pump to drag the oil up from the sump and up to the head. Oil will flow out the end of the rocker spindle holes. Have you considered upgrading to the 10mm SFC pump body and gears while you're doing this? A good increase in insurance benefit for the cost.

Thanks guys,
Yes I have seen the upgrade to 10 mm, but at this stage ill keep to the standard
I think I read a bit too much into the reassembly of the oil pump going off there description in the Green Book
Thanks

I usually squirt some oil over the cam lobes and rockers before starting it, then when it starts I check with an inlet rocker cover off that oil is coming up, I have a cover sitting with no nuts on for this. Then just fit the nuts and nip them up.

I'm supersized you could even pull the Oil Pump gear off; if it wasn't clocked at 11:00, or something like that.

Goes together the same way - Gotta align them Shaft Pins ;o)

By the way - I replaced them Slot head bolts with Allen Hex Heads.
