A Question...

What does it mean to be able to offer and/or search for spare parts in the forum? How are rare parts valued, and what does it mean for members to collect Laverda parts and then resell them later, for example, if their circumstances change? Do you have to take your spare parts to the grave with you? It's not just an economic question, but also a moral one. I'm curious...

There's an old saw, in English, "Anything is only worth what someone will pay for it."

HP printer ink is one of the highest priced liquids on the market. More expensive, per litre, than the finest Single Malt in my collection.

Vincent van Gogh sold relatively few paintings, in his lifetime, and certainly not for the kind of prices they now fetch.

When I bought my Laverda, its retail price was 110% of my annual salary. Valuations on it have ebbed and flowed on it over the years but irrelevantly, to me, as I have no intention of selling it.
If Moto Laverda hadn't made profits, they wouldn't have manufactured my Triple. I'm glad they did, on both counts.

As far as I'm concerned just advertise your things, why not? If they are too expensive they won't sell but the market value will become apparent and if the price is lowered then they will find a buyer. I have a garage full of things that aren't worth much but now and again I have something that can help someone out and so we work together.
There are less people looking for supposedly rare parts now. It's time to sell. The party is over really.

So are you looking to sell or buy spare parts?

Regarding prices, I’ve seen some ridiculous parts prices on this Forum, some of which are still for sale. Some feel they are sitting on a pot of gold due to the scarcity, and the light bulb doesn’t go off after months of no takers.

Looking at prices from the few Laverda parts suppliers is a good metric for estimating fair parts prices. EBay is full of crusty and over priced Laverda parts.

I had a stash of damaged ND gauges and after looking at the prices used ones do actually sell for on ebay, (some are around €500) I decided to try and repair some of them. Very satisfying actually and I may have saved myself a bundle of cash.
Had some good advice from an ILOC member who used to rebuild them and he also gave me a spare glass he had.
I looked at the German site of the guy who rebuilds them now and he wants a lot of money for new old stock Honda gauges. I actually have a nos Laverda mph speedometer with the logo. Can't be many of them left.

Very interesting to read the content of the original post in light of my very recent and very unpleasant experience with the person who posted it. To say I am unhappy with the original poster, Mr Ralfs, would be an understatement. I won't ramble on here but create my own thread ... at the end of the day I should have studied harder in my Latin lessons ...'caveat emptor'!

I pick up parts I think I may need, either for restoration or keeping a bike running. Because I keep a weather eye on Lav parts I have a feel for availability and prices. When it becomes apparent parts I’ve picked up are no longer needed, or when someone puts out a ‘wanted’ post, I happily sell without profit being a motive. I’m happy to help someone else like me who is just trying to keep an old Lav running.

Very much what I think we all assume of the For Sale section. It's not the place for spruikers who think they're holding onto gold because a Laverda is 'an exotic and very expensive machine', and Laverda owners are their cash cows. There are plenty of other places in the world for shysters to line their pockets with the hard-earned of unwitting and naiive punters - this shouldn't be one of them.

I think the days of rare parts are over, you’ve got about five years to find someone that’s wants whatever you’ve got.
Honda at Chiswick used to sell the rare ( CR110 etc) race spares on a need only basis so no one was hoarding 20 exhaust valves.
Much better to sell a bit to someone who actually needs it than to keep it just in case. Part of Laverdas downfall is this rarity, teeth sucking, ridiculous spares prices nonsense.

Well it's pistons that do my head in. I hate throwing them away because the ring land is worn then having to pay a fortune for new ones. At the moment I have three 75.4 Jota pistons, two are ok but one is out of spec. I have just bought some std MGA 1588cc rings because the top ring is just a tiny bit thicker than standard, taking up the slack. I reckon it will work.

The 1959 MGA rings arrived and the top ring is a perfect fit for the worn ring land. Unfortunately the land isn't worn as much on the innermost section which I should have expected so I'll have to figure out a way of removing that material. it needs very little removing though.
I can see our esteemed engineers shaking their heads when they read this and saying just throw it away ha ha!

Hi Ralf. Good question, personally I would like to help people who are looking, plus if I have parts that I think I will never use myself, then I would like to sell them, plus it is good to clean up your workshop. I experienced something very strange here in this forum, there was someone who suddenly thought I was a company? Because I had a lot of parts for sale, and I was told by the admins of this forum that I should delete my ads, so of course I did, there is only one loser, namely the people who still want and bother to work and have fun with the older Laverdas. Plus I get contacted by many people who want to sell their spare parts stock, but now the rare parts are sold from other sales sites, yes Practice Practice, but that is how it is

Thank you Peder, see you next time and let*s drink a cold beer of that old old men who prefer to stay among themselves. They would me to take outside the forum...Saluti Ralf
