Hello everyone. I've recently acquired a 3C tank which has had the filler cap neck removed
so that all I have is a hole where the cap normally goes. I've seen filler necks for the standard cap for sale on ebay but bearing in mind that the originals always leak I was wondering if anyone had experience of fitting one of the aircraft type filler caps to a tank.
What work is involved (i.e. welding?) can anyone recommend a particular make of cap?
Can anyone recommend a company in the UK to do the job if welding is required?
Regards Pat.

I can fit a cap for you Pat, I have a press tool I made a while back to allow a flush fit cap to fit flush or I can fit a threaded collar to accept a Monza type cap. Got both kinds of cap in stock.

  Keith.

Just fitted one to POP.
It was a Newton one I think.
It was an SOB as it was quite wide and due to the complex curves at that point in the tank I had to have it frenched in to mount it fliush.
I do believe there are smaller ones that can just bolt straight on.
Also I had to fit a one way breather as the cap was not vented.
It also came with a cork gasket but I managed to find a place that copied it in Viton, as that gives better fuel resistance.

If I was doing it again I would buy a dinged tank from a modern bike and cut the area out around the filler cap and have that welded in. They come with vented caps and locks.

That looks great Grant. Keith I'll be in touch soon thanks. Great site this  :D

Hi,

Looks like you are sorted, but these two links may give you an idea of what is available and their measurements?
http://www.thinkauto.com/caps.htm  -  Aston & Monza;

Please post a picture once done.

Thanks Geoff and Stuart, forgot to mention you Stuart earlier in my over excitement ha ha!

or

http://www.newton-equipment.de/aerocaps/aerocaps_200.html

the 200 comes either as flang-type or neck-type. the neck type has just 50mm diameter, will almost fit right away into the existing hole (even with the original cap...)

Hi Grant,

I really like the badge choice and positioning on your tank, the whole combination of colour, filler and badge is one of the nicest I have seen.

Andy

Andy thanks!
The badges are self-adhesive gold RGS ones, not the screw on ones. Mix up with the painter and he filled in the holes...
The hoses will soon go brown though, although for the moment a seredipitous match.

I am still not sure I like the breather vent or it's location and certainly not the vent hose.
I had that done when I was planning to racerise it, now it looks out of place on a 'standard'.

It's not that bad but I agree, it is slightly disturbing the else very clean look of the tank. I think it would maybe have looked better to place it either as a replacement for one of the screws of the filler (if its thread is long enough?!?) or maybe invisible in the "tunnel" of the tank if it can be mounted that way (is there a valve inside that keeps the gas in while letting air into the tank?).
