Airfilter

Hi all,

I'm using half (the red part) of the (Clem) Unifilter, sliced into a redpart and a greenpart, because I found the total sandwich to thick for the cartridge in my 1978 3CL.
Taken out the redfilter yesterday and it looks deminished inbetween the 'holding grates' (it's a kind of grid as you all will know). It looks like the filtersubstance has partially melted and at several places it's thickness is less than half of the original. I never encountered any spitting back in my carbs, so does that mean the filter substance is not up to fuel?
Anybody experienced the same?

Using the greenpart right now, will see if that one lasts a bit longer.

What is the part# of the K&N filter that could be used in the 3CL again?
Thanks,

Hein

I dont buy or sell the unifilter anymore, but..........

if it doesnt fit the 180 air filter box slot then that is a first!
the filter media is very susceptable to being cleaned or near anything with an aerosol propellant, for example chain lube,WD40,engine degreaser, cleaning is best done in a small tank useing only white spirit (the fluid decorators use for cleaning oil based paint from brushes) so maybe you have contamination from that source? re oiling is best done with filter oil from Unifilter themselves (naturelment) but of course any filter oil from a moto cross shop will work.Once you have oiled your filter squeese it to remove excess oil (ie most of it) it is simply not possible to remove to much by normal hand methods, a flat surface and a rolling pin works quite well.

I have no experience with Unifilter, but I believe they can be a bit restrictive if over-oiled.

I know that airconditioning pre-filter media works well in Laverda air boxes. I have a couple of square metres of the stuff that I scrounged from a building site where I was construction manager about a century ago (it was an offcut). Happy to cut Laverda-shaped pieces* out of it and mail them to anyone.

If you don't want to pester me (and I'd be grateful if you don't  :D), just go to a mechanical building services contractor and ask for a piece of pre-filter media - something like this: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/742200127/air_freshener_F5_pre_filter_for.html?s=p

They'll probably give you a decent sized chunk (enough for several lifetimes of a Laverda engine) for nothing. However, beggers can't be choosers, so you may get a piece that's an inch thick and has no chance of squeezing down to 1/4 inch to fit into the Laverda filter frame. Don't worry, the stuff splits into layers quite easily. Cut a piece the right shape and you'll be able to split it into two or three filter elements.

Given the age of most forum members here, and the average mileages covered, a couple of filter elements should do you until you're in your dotage and well beyond riding age ? :D

* by "Laverda shaped pieces" I mean for a standard Lav trple airbox with the plastic mesh frame that holds the filter media. You'll need to split the frame halves and pull out the remnants of the old filter media, then sandwich the new stuff in the frame. ?

I have no idea what a 750 filter looks like so don't ask me for a 750 SF shaped piece.

Cheers,
Cam

Thanks Clem, Cam,

I used some K&N filter oil (aerosol) on the Unifilter, so maybe that ruined it?
I will go for the cheaper Air refreshing pre-filter stuf.
