Alternative starter motors?

I have had to pull my starter motor to pieces to clean it inside...so now it goes again. but it got me thinking, with the age and weight of it and modern technology etc is there an alternative starter that is just as grunty but smaller or lighter or indeed more efficient? And if there is, does it fit a Laverda 3CL or can be adapted?

I don't think so, at least not as a bolt-on solution. The only alternative to the old Bosch starters is the SJCE that is sold by OCT f.e. brand new with the correct gear for your bike. they are bolt-on-solutions. But not lighter, just a bit stronger...

and also sold by Gjis van Dycke in Holland, but at eye watering cost, I have never had a drop of oil leak from mine, bought and installed while I waited (and was on holiday)  in Holland, he was reluctant to allow me to keep the original.

SJCE supplied starters for bikes that were not Laverda orientated, these were brought to the UK and most got modified to incorporate an oil seal that the intended bike did not get, in the main this was done very well and  worked well, there were some that did not get the seal installed (initially) which was an error quickly corrected, and others that did get the seal, but leaked, also quickly corrected. Not everyone solved the problem and at least one known reprobate reverted to a Bosch following a "custom" rebuild of that unit.

For classic cars, Jaguar, Rover, plus Perkins etc, there is a modern starter kit available which uses a much smaller unit and a small offset bolt on gearbox, they are not costly, it might be possible to adapt one of these to fit a triple, and more importantly, because of supply issues a Breganze 750.

I used one of these gear reduction and adjustable mounting "universal fit" starters on my Triumph Spitfire car rebuild. The mounting plate was fully adjustable for orientation, and the gear reduction makes the starter much more effective than the original that came on the car.

there must be something like this that can be fitted to a Laverda?

The problem lies in the reduction gearing of a stock triple, a starter with 1/2 the power of the stock starters simply isn't up to the task.  Additional gearing reduction will be required, and that would probably make an initially lighter starter just as heavy.  Not much space within the starter drive housing for larger gears, so this gearing will need to be external/integral with the starter.

Many Bosch starters that have been neglegted over the past decades are now well past their prime.  The SJCE is a straight bolt-in alternative and will out-last most of us.

The starters currently offered for a wide range of old brit cars is much the same as many jap cars have been using for quite some time.  Still have an old Subaru starter laying around, quite small overall with integral reduction gearbox.  Very similar to what H-D have been using for the past 20-odd years!

Sorry for jumping in on this post but I have a starter issue right now... I have a 180' 1200 starter that is playing up so I have stripped it down and brushes and commutator seem ok but \i am trying to test the field coils in the outer housing and I dont know if I am going about it the right way???????? I am connecting to a 12v supply battery and +v to the threaded stud and -v to the housing now as I see it I should be able to place a screw driver blade in the housing and get magnetism from all 4 coils yes??? I get zilch... >:( Is I doing it proper innit???

Think the current path has to go through the armature as well to get a full circuit. (four pole DC motors 101)

Ok I will clean and re-assemble but the original problem was a bit weird it was suffering multiple symptoms some times weak sometimes nothing and sometimes cutting out I will see what happens..... so I should not be expecting an electro magnetic effect off the 4 field coils when applying a 12 volt pd
