battery chargers

Due to a wrist injury and small operation the bike hasn't been out of the garage for the last ten weeks and it will be about another eight or so before it gets out for a bit of fresh air.

It is fitted with an Odyssey battery and when I checked it yesterday it was showing 12.7v, due to the fact that I can't get it out for a run in the near future I am thinking of purchasing a suitable charger to keep it topped up and in good condition.

I was looking at a ctek mxs 5 with or without automatic temperature compensation, has anyone used one of these and got any views on them or has anyone got any suggestions for an alternative.

Hi Joe,

I have 2 of them, one for the LiFePo battery in my Zane 750, one for the gel-battery in my jota. Both are working absolutely fine! You can leave them on the bike and the charger will - as soon as the voltage drops below a certain level - dis-charge the battery controlled for a longer battery life and re-charge it again.

Flip side of that is, that you might want to use the bike just at a point in time the charger just does a reconditioning cycle and find your battery dead (happened to me...). So - if you think of using the bike the next day, you better disconnect the charger from the power once and re-connect it after 30 Seconds or so, so it forgets where it was in the cycle and just charges again.

Not at home at the mo' so can't check the model, but my CTEK works fine with Odyssey batteries but it has to be put on the 'winter' setting.

CTEK MXS5.0 is ideally suited to the job and has inbuilt temp compensation as standard.  As Reggie said, use the snowflake setting.
However, assuming there is no standing load on your bike, and your voltmeter is accurate, then the Odyssey should hold up fine.  12.7v is approx 90% of full charge.  Assuming it was fully charged 10 weeks ago, then it'll cope with another 8 easily.  Get well soon!

I'm a big fan of the Battery Tender Jr from Deltran-works for lead acid, AGM  & gel cell batteries-costs about  $25.

Can't agree more. Hjgh quality for small bucks--work fine on lithium also--sold close to 100 of them--no complaints.

Don't know if they're available down below though======
