Hey,

Today I tried to start the old lady but she didn't give me a blast...

Result after 2 days charging the battery I don't think it comes ok again...

Charging at 14,6V in the beginning and it says 12V but when i push the start button... bang 7-8 volts and a one turn of the starter motor (slowly of course). Starter motor is ok (free) the clutch is fine... Only the battery is the problem because I had a few issue with it before.

It was an old type of acid battery ( Amp and Volts are ok ) , but know I want to try a new type of battery, maybe even a smaller one if that is an option. And also no acid for me anymore.
Looked through the board and came on 2 batterys for the moment. The odyssey and the Motobatt but these are both the same size. Are they other good options? Experience(s)?

Bike is a Laverda SF2 normal engine and stuff like that...

Greetings Sam

Odyssey PC680....is there any other battery?

I've used these for years and they have been excellent. I currently have them on my Monty, Alpino and Guzzi Monza. And when the battery goes on my SF3 that's what I'll be replacing it with.

Regards,

Nigel

Yep plenty that do the same thing and are cheaper,

Pc680 weighs 7.7 kilos, Shorai 14 in the 750s weighs 700gms

Odysseys were revolutionary when they were first introduced, cant deny their longevity , last one went for nearly 9 years now they're old hat

I don't like Odysseys, as they are dead fussy about charging.....and from experience, warranty is worthless unless you use one of their very expensive chargers. Even if you have their expensive charger, your bike's charging system may kill it anyway, as it needs a narrow voltage range for charge (my old 3C system probably killed mine stone dead in a year).

I would go for something less fussy, unless you already have an Odyssey charger.  I went back to golf cart AGM batteries. Heavy, but not fussy and spins the motor up at considerable speed.

I killed an Odyssey using the wrong charger. I bought 2 at the same time, the second I charged with the correct charger and is still going strong 3 years later.

Hey Jack,

Meant to tell you what happened when I tried to revive my Odysseys: first one revived a treat on a fancy charger, the second doesn't even register as a battery. That's the one that was on the 3C with its crude charging system.

The revived one seems to work fine on the Jota, but doesn't turn it over anywhere near as fast as the golf cart battery, so I put it in the car where it works fine.

Golf cart battery I bought was a Yuasa YPC33-12, 12v 33ah.  Very powerful and less fussy than a drunk prop forward.  :D

I was very impressed with how the lithium battery performed in the 1200 rooter has when it wouldn't start, turned the motor over for 15 minutes or more till we figured out the problem. I was cynical about them till that demonstration. The battery looked rather lonely and pathetic cowering in the corner of the battery holder.

I have Deka AGM in argy and motobatt AGM in the beemer. Both have been excellent but whenever they need replacing it will be with a Lithium one.

Haven't done any home brew for years. Now that it's cooled down a bit it might be time to drag it all out again and give it a go, not that I'm drinking much these days......

Aha, a batteries tread?

I went to the home brew shop today and bought some more beer kits and an extra 5 gal fermenting bin...

Flippant and possibly abrasive reply, sorry.

I am always a little surprised by the Odyssey PC 680 being the 'one'. There are physically smaller and ironically with higher output than the 680 within the Odyssey range, I have the 525 (45?) in my Jota, excellent battery, no complaints, 5 yr ish old. I did PC 680, it didn't last well, why? I don't know. Odyssey batteries are not cheap, lead acid batteries can be! I have lead acid in my American Eagle and in my RGS (until I borrowed it for the Guzzi).

In theory buy a genuine Odyssey battery made to the quality that many have experienced and you will have a solution for 10 yrs. Spend approximately 1/3 of the cost for a lead acid lawnmower battery that fits you will get a solution that will last for between 2 and 5 years...

Happy brewing!
:)

I am in the UK, I use an immersive 50W aquarium heater to keep a steady 24C...

Found out when my PC680 died, thanks to Keith,Odysseys are not suitable for single phase charging systems (says so in instructions) which I will read in future! ie BTZ luckily got my dosh back from Motorworks,no fuss and bought a Varta.

Oh well, a bit like tyres and oil - everyone has a different experience/view/preference etc etc.

I use an optimate charger and have had no trouble at all with the Odyssey's. I've even bought one back from completely dead (twice...) when I stupidly left the ignition/lights on in the garage after a bit of tinkering and got distracted by something else and forgot it until a few days later...

It's the right colour for the Monty anyway...

Lots of different stories same with chargers apparently CTEK  only for Odysseys but as you say.......

Agreed. It's a wonderful world when you can be right and wrong, in equal measure, at the same time...

I suppose it would be quite wrong to mention LED bulbs at this stage...
