Brake disc carriers colour.

Hi,
some dpo has painted my buddy's carriers rather dilettantely.
He wants to have them black again.
Which method do you reckon to be advisable?
1.) painting
2.) powder coating
3.) anodizing

Any serious cons to one of them?

Ernesto

For sure anodising will resist any brake fluid spills.
If you do use paint I would suggest a heat-resistant paint and bake it on.
Not sure if powder coating would resist brake fluid.

Powder coating will only resist heat up to a point (about 200?C). If you have the carriers powder coated, it might soften with heat and squish out from between the disk and carrier, allowing the retaining bolts to get loose. That's assuming the disk is solidly bolted to the carrier (not one of those new-fangled floaters).

I have them re anodized, powder coat is no good unless it is machined off the mating faces as the disc may run out and bolting engineered faces together with a layer of powder between  them is bad practice, potentially dangerous with disc carriers.. Thin coat of quality satin black is OK as a second best, it's not as robust as anodizing.

Easiest to get the joint that anodises them to chemically strip the paint as well.

try some VHT caliper/rotor paint. Works quite well, really tough finish, especially if you clear coat with the same product as well. Take note that the stuff has to be baked at 200 F for at least an hour to set up. I use the kitchen oven, just be sure to wait until you know you are going to be alone in the house for at least an hour....  ;)
