Broken crankcase

Well Cosi is claiming immunity as he is the president of the club, so if doesn't run for el presidente again he's a dead set runner for sure....otherwise we'll have to amend the constitution to change the way DHOTY is chosen  :D :D :D :D

I thought you had to be a member of Club Laverda Queensland to be eligible. You weren't crazy enough to join were you Maurice?

Anyway, I don't blame Maurice the his rubbish advice  ;)

I was 99% sure it wouldn't bend back into place but thought I'd give it a try anyway. The bent bit had to be shifted one way or another, either by bending back or breaking off. The result determined the method of completing the job. I didn't want to pour buckets of weld metal into it so decided on the fibre/epoxy fix.

I reckon it would be possible to build an entire crankcase out of carbon fibre that would be lighter and stronger than cast alloy. I wonder if anyone has tried it. I have a vague recollection that Ford did something with composite polymer engines a few years ago. Could be an interesting experiment for Boba  :D

I'll post some shots of the final repair when it's done. Haven't had a chance to get into the workshop for the last week or so. Got other problems to deal with. Life gets in the way sometimes.

You may not believe it Cam but I was a member of the QLD club quite a while before I became a mexican in the 1990s.
I had a similar flaw in a crankcase but mine tapped back into position maybe I was lucky  :(

As promised, photos of the repaired case where the chain took a bite out if it.

Repair is made with about 6 or 7 layers of glass cloth and epoxy resin. Epoxy bog on the outside (visible) surface, filed/sanded back and painted with "aluminium" coloured engine enamel and cured with a heat gun. It's not perfect but it'll do. It's never going to be a concourse bike (Cosi will have a go at me for my spelling of concourse).
It actually looks a bit better than the rest of the case, but after a few thousand km of grime, it will blend in nicely.  :D

Apologies for the quality of the photo of the top side of the case. There was a bit of crap on the lens of the phone camera. If you want me wander out to the shed in the wind and rain to take a better photo, youse can all get fucked.
