Broken Head-fin Repair

I just finished this repair to rescue a badly damaged 750 head.

It was shipped to DAM Classic Racing to consider the value of fixing the 7 cooling fins that had been smashed off.
Because the rest of the head was in good order it was considered worth saving.

Wow - the result looks really great! The fins seem to be a bit thicker than the original ones, but maybe that is just the picture.

I am not sure though if you get the money back for the countless hours of welding. Must have been 3-4 full days, no? I assume you cut out the damaged fins, cut some according material in shape and welded it in piece by piece, with the center distance piece as the next step, right? Very nice work, hope it works as good as it looks.

Well(d) done...  :D

The fins are the same thickness, but material to match the color of the casting is difficult and creating the casting patina a bit fiddly.
Once it's on the road and the newness disappears it is indistinguishable from original.

Compared to the cost of buying a used head of unknown hardness etc, cutting valve seats, fitting new valves/guides/seals and other machining, it is worth the work to the customer.

I've done many alloy repair jobs on heads and crankcases and spread the work on them over a few days because of the welding process, but not as many hours as you think once you are in the swing of it. Less than 8hours on this one.

My Brand New 70 750 SFO came with a cracked head fin -  How much did that repair cost ?

Other then cleaning issues, I never had problems with that cracked fin.

8 hours times the local standard hour charge plus material - I would expect something like 700 - 800? locally here maybe?
