Broken Speedo Cable

Had an odd speedo cable brake on Sunday, its been slowly rotating in its mount and I have been twisting it back. It stopped working on Sunday and I just had a quick look. The nut was still attached to the speed but the outer was broked just under the nut, whats a pain is the inner has broken flush with the threaded spigot on the back of the speed with the broken off bit not keen to come out. Tried needle nose plyer as there is a wisp of cable wire there, no joy. Tomorrow I will try again with a couple of very thin sharp bradawls, and hopefully, wangle it out. Don't think drilling will work as its made to rotate, fingers crossed the ice picks work.

I imagine Wolfgang has the speedo cable but suggest you dissemble the wheel hub and inspect the gear drive - It may need a cleaning, a spacing washer and some Moly grease.

It will eliminate the Speed Gauge from wandering and cut down on vibrations that hurt the cable.

Happily, I got it out, remembered I had a tiny ended pair of needle nose pliers. Lovely tool, precision jaws. Got a good grip and out it came.Might give them a go at the hardwood splinter I have in the palm of my hand. I have a cable coming from the NSW club stock, I hope, I checked the drive at the last tyre change a month ago.
You really need a speedo around this speed camera infested place.

PS: It a good practice to put some heavy duty electrical Heat Shrink over the cable in places that you observe are stressful and lube the cable with ATF.

I acquired some fine tipped surgical clamps for just such situations. Work better than pliers as they lock when clamped.
