BTZ issue

This is a bit off topic but has some relevance Laverda wise.I have been chasing an off idle lack of power on my TL Pantah, spent a hell of a long time thinking jetting but 2 days ago found that the timing was advancing really late.According to the manual it should get to full advance at 2900rpms with the typical wedge shaped section on the flywheel opposite to the pickups.Mine has an oddball 3 stepped section actuating the advance, used on 350 Elephants and my TL so far discovered. My bike was getting full advance at 5000rpms with the correct gap of 0.35mm.Attempting to correct this back to 2900rpm we made the gap 0.55mm.At that it went the wrong way,now 6000rpms.So we backed it down to 0.2mm and it went back to 5000rpms.Thinking it might be an earth issue we cleaned to earth to the BTZ and it then went to 4000rpms.Still high by a bit more than 1000 revs.Appreciate any comments, especially any Laverda BTZ pickup gap info.BTW we discovered the Ballist Resisters are still there,do they effect the timing advance?

maybe the polarity of the pick ups is reversed, try swapping the wires over and try again, but check with a strobe and dont run for long like that if it is not the answer. Also check that none of the pickup wires has worn through by roation of the movung parts of chaffing anywhere else.

We tried that,we compared it with another bike.It was the same oreintated wiring, from the relatively newly rewired pickups to the Molex plug. Its a odd one.Going to do a test ride tomorrow, maybe with full advance now at 4k and the earlier steps closer to idle it might be ok?

ay Vince, bring ya TL up to the Bello rally mate.  has been many long years since CLQ has burnt a farken Ducati.

& we'll bring the marshmallows!  :D

Do I have to do every bloody thing, carnt you blokes supply your own BBQ fuel.I just spoke to Mike Sond... at Gowanlocks who reckons air gap is a whacking great furfy re timing advance,he reckons I have a box issue, bit odd its both box's at the same time. Now who do I know with a great big bucket full of BTZ box's,probably sitting next to another great big bucket of Delordo carbs.

Finally got around to doing a test ride after 2 solid days rooting around with air gaps. Its 100% better,I have a very very big hill that I test on and from a standing start it now pulls up it hard, even if I back off or just ease off the mark.It now gets full advance at 4000,we think the biggest effect on it was cleaning the BTZ box earth connection.Nothing much happens with the gap at either 0.2mm to 0.35mm,it stays at 5000rpm.With the gap at 0.55 it went to 6000rpm.We cleaned the earth after reducing the gap to 0.2mm and it went to 4000rpms.For those with BTZ box's on Laverdas having good earths to the box's appears to be very important.
