cant select neutral or first gear

Sorry for replying myself:
if you get all the gears by moving the spindle by hand
or the gear with pliers while rotating the wheel,
it's likely that the adjustment (eccentric screw) is
out of line.
If not, well, there's a problem.
Check the "teeth" of the selector arm, too.

Removed the neutral switch from bottom of cases - and its fixed! Thanks all of you for the input. I'm so pleased.
The fibre washer under the switch looked disintegrated. Maybe when the cases were vapour blasted the switch wasn't removed.

Anyway I'm looking forward to see how this engine runs after many headaches.
Off for a rode on the SFC1000 this weekend. Autumn in New Zealand is beautiful.

well done Marnix

I wasn't implying that the problem would be the detent spring, I was suggesting that I would not trust a bought in unit that had been previously rebuilt and un-run and always change the detent spring when I have cases open (and always Timecert all 12 of the 9mmm stud threads as well!)

Many thanks to a list of people who I couldn't have done without.

Motodd Rob
SFC Piet - you gave me some very helpful advice last year at the Barry Sheene mtg
tank paintwork - Mark Hatton
Marnix - neutral switch installed with a spark plug washer under it to get it at the right height. I was worried when I couldn't find neutral, prior to your tip

Cheers
