Carbs

Being a seasoned 2-stroke rider, my first attempt in this case would have been replacing the plug of the cylinder not firing. As already mentioned, they may have nice spark only when operated outside the engine.

Did the plug of the failing cylinder get wet during your attempts to get it running properly?

Assuming a blocked idle system, any attempt to clean it properly w/o taking the carbies off is futile. :-* Narrowest part of the system is the small orifice running from the mixture screw directly into the throat at engine side. Pushing from the wrong side will only result in finally clogging it up with dirt in most cases.

IMHO the most nasty dirt trap in the idle system on many Dellortos, including the PHFs, is the hole where the mixture screw sits in. >:D
PITA to clean out properly. On the worst Dello I had, any attempts by ultrasonic, carb cleaner and compressed air had failed in getting it's idle circuit back to reasonable work. Shortly before throwing the sucker into the bin, I resorted to a single strand of copper wire (grind your axes here), to carefully scrape out some tiny flakes of dirt from that place. I did this outside in the bright sun, to shine some light into that hole. It's dark in there...and the little hole where the screw tip goes in should better not be touched by the wire.  ::)  After this being done, the idle circuit of that little troublemaker was working perfectly well again.

Even the tiniest bit of dirt in these holes will create trouble, keep this in mind when putting the mixture screw back in after cleaning.

Would recommend to drain the float bowls when laying up the bike for long periods, they are selling shit fuels these days.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I've tried everything, and the plug works fine on a different cylinder. It was not getting wet.

I've pulled the carbs now and will try to clean as much as possible before reinstalling.

Will post back...

Cheers

OK... so:

1.- Short version: Pulled the carbs, cleaned, are finally working! Firing on all 3 cylinders. Success

2.- Real life version: Pulled the carbs, managed to bend the metal plates that hold the carbs together, spent some 3 hours pouring  carb spray and compressed air into each hole I saw (or imagined), disassembled the three carbs and managed to straighten the metal plates; reassembled everything (twice!), and finally got the carbs on.

I?ve only just started, and it finally (sorts of) idles. It would not before, so I can say it?s a success. I believe its running really rich, but I guess I need to give it a run, tomorrow, and then try to set up it right.

Thank you all for your input and support.

Cheers.

Might respond to fine tuning - maybe even smaller idle jets? You haven't mentioned what size jets it's running.

It was just a question of "clearing its throat" really. Some running around (did 10 km) and revving it up was enough. It still needs fine tuning and a carb sync, but it is definitely running well on all 3 cyls.

Mind you, despite all the strange noises this engine does (not used to it); it is VERY addictive!

Cheers
