I am not the best at electrical issues, but hopefully someone more knowledgeable will also answer.
The stock ignition coils for an RGS are roughly 3.3 ohms primary resistance, as are the coils for many other older bikes and older ignitions.
If you still have the RGS's stock ignition, for the longest ignition life you want to stay with a coil with the 3 ohms primary resistance.
You can use coils with a lower primary resistance like the 0.5 primary resistance coils you mentioned. Most more modern bikes with more modern ignitions use the much lower primary resistance coils, the more modern ignitions are designed to handle much higher amperage.
You can use the lower primary resistance coils with your RGS, probably will even give you a much stronger spark at the spark plugs, BUT at the cost of your old RGS ignition being forced to have to handle roughly 6.6 TIMES the current the old RGS ignition was designed for. Long term may not be the best for the survival of your old RGS ignition.
A standard RGS ignition coil in a 12v system is about 3.3 ohm resistance. When running, your ignition system would be getting about 12.75v so, using ohms law the old RGS ignition system is designed to deal with roughly 3.86 amps. ( 12.75v / 3.3 ohms = 3.86 amps )
If you substitute the more modern ignition with lower resistance, say 0.5 ohms, your ignition will now have to deal with 25.5 amps (12.75v / 0.5 ohms = 25.5 amps)
with the lower primary resistance coil your old RGS ignition will have to handle more than 6.6 times the amperage it was designed for, going from 3.86 amps with a 3 ohm primary resistance coil to 25.5 amps with a 0.5 ohm primary resistance coil.
Most folks here are using 3 ohm coils with stock RGS ignition systems. There are various coil alternatives, ranging from DYNATEK 3 ohm green coils, or their mini coil, or Various Japanese coils, especially those from the Kawasaki EX250 Ninja twin and similar, they are also 3 ohm primary resistance.
