Good afternoon,

I just opened my engine and the cylinder head showed the cracks as in the below photo. There?s one in the left and right cylinders...

I?d be happy to receive your comments. Can or should this be repaired, nothing to be done or do I keep it as a souvenir?

Have a nice ride,

Martin

Martin,

Can be repaired by laser welding, have done so successfully several times.  Probably also by other methods, but almost impractical and/or very difficult.  Where on the planet are you?

Will require seat inserts for a long-term repair.

Its a problem with the Jotas as well. MY 81 Jota had a crack in the skull cap, middle cylinder between the valves. I was worried the seat inserts would fall out so replaced the whole head ... this is back in 1983. Fortunately the factory came to the party and sent me a free head. Not sure what causes it because the new head is still good after 30 years. I suspect well seated valves will help. Cheers Steve

do you still have the cracked head ?
can I have it ?
I'll pay for the postage  :D

Used to work in vacuum engineering and was very impressed with electron beam welding to full depth from one side.

If I had known that one day I would own a Laverda then I should have stayed in my old job !

I like my 750 GT with its small valve head because of acres of material between seats and plug thread roots, sharp corners etc.

Can't help thinking that the valve seat fit or geometry had something to do with your particular problem though.

Cheers,

Rob

I found much the same thing in my RGA's head when I pulled it down for a freshen up in '96.  From memory there was a crack from each exhaust seat to the periphery, and one between inlet and exhaust in #2.  Given stuff was comparitively easy to get back then, I got a replacement head from Phil.  I too was worried the seats might fall out, which is why I replaced it.  Not sure they would or not.
Still have the head, and Red - no, you can't have it. :)

I can't resist it - I suppose the job sucked?

Hi Red, Yes I still have the old head. Been hanging on to it after moving house a dozen times, 2 wives and a menagerie of other lesser bikes. Actually I live in Brisbane so one day expect to see it.  Steve
