Cush drive bearings

Before I get the big hammer out could someone please explain how to get the bearings out of the rear cush drive on a RGS.

I'm assuming that the sleeve that sits inside the bearings needs to be drifted out giving access to enable a blind bearing puller to used, or have I got this wrong.

Yes, the sleeve needs to come out.
If all else fails, use an arc welder to weld a bead around the inside of one of the bearings. When the weld cools, it will contract and fall out, and drifting the outer race out is easy.
A variant on this is to weld or braze a washer onto the outer face of the bearing, then bash it out from the other side using a suitable drift.

Heating the hub will help too, saves wearing away the fit of bearing outer to hub.

The sleeve may be tight due to rust, or misaligned bearings due to damaged housings & Loctite.  I always fit the sleeve with a little grease and do this immediately after fitting the bearings when using Loctite to prevent future problems.

Easy to understand why so many cush drives have sloppy bearing fit with all this talk of hammering and bashing  :D

The application of heat to the housing (stop when the bearing grease starts to smoke!) will see the bearings ready to drop out, unless Loctite has been used.  Again, heat helps weaken its grip.

Rob that makes sense, I tried to gently drift the sleeve out but after it moved a few mill it stopped and I didn't want to resort to the big hammer, I think you are right that the bearings might be slightly misaligned hence the sticking.

Wife's at work till 5 so it looks good to pop it in the oven and then give it another try.
