Dot 4 vs Dot 5

Simon, I have the suspicion that Brembo changed the rubber formula a few times over the years.

What they have been supplying for the past 4-5 years seems to easily outlast NOS items.  I remember when it was nigh on impossible to renew the fluid and bleed the rear MC without first renewing the seals, even when using the same fluid that had been used up to then!  The seals were so fragile they would fail instantly when moved over their normal working range.  This has become a thing of the past, so something has changed for the better! :D  Even RGS clutch MCs and o-rings seem to last longer!

Perhaps you had the bad luck to find older stock that did not stand up to DOT5.  But, having said that, I did my DOT5 experimentation in the mid/late 90s, only experienced issues when the seals had contact with other fluids beforehand.

I always avoided 5.x and kept using 4.x. It did what it should do and I simply did not see a need to change. Maybe that is just ignoring any advance 5.x should have, but I learned once never to change something that works.

my 2 cents.

Hi Lothar
Never thought of using 4x is it better than Tennents lager.

A bit of explanation needed here, XXXX beer is simply the greatest refreshment liquid ever invented by mankind, but it's not the same as 4.x brake fluid. Considering the effects it has on Queenslanders, it's probably wisest not to use it in pressurised brake systems, although I'm sure it would do a sterling job.

Ken (from Queensland, missing XXXX badly, otherwise known for being fairly objective)

Hey Ken, XXXX used to be made under license in Milwaukee when I was living there in the mid 90's. I came accross it in New Mexico back then. It tasted better than the local stuff and was about 6%!!

Yay, another beer thread :)

BTW back on topic, the BMW forums are full of threads on big $ repairs from .5 so don't go there!

Piet, is that the kind of thing they write on shithouse walls in Germany? I can only find erotic drawings and funny rhymes here! Ther's no technical advice at all! No wonder Germany is the workshop of the world!
Always liked that line in the film Kes...hands off cocks, on with socks. Bit random but who cares, great film Kes  :D
Oh yes...where were we?

Dot 3, Dot 4 and Dot 5.1 (sometimes called super Dot 4 or supreme Dot 4 ) are all interchangeable.
Dot 5 won't mix with any of the others. All can be used in our bikes but Dot 5 requires all new seals first as has been said. Other than not attracting water, Dot 5 has the benefit of not peeling the paint off your shiny new tank.. I've been using Motul RFB 600 ( a dot 4 based fluid) for years and haven't found anything better...

doeasnt matter what continent it is madeon, or what incontinent drinks it, all lager is EUROFIZZ !!

DOT 5.1 is synthetic IIRC, and doesn't eat your paintwork either...
