Andrew,
The easiest method is to fix a temporary pointer made from a piece of stiff wire to one of the ignition cover mounting holes, marking the ignition rotor and lining these up when the crank is at 32? BTDC. The DMC unit should be switched to curve #1. Affix your strobe take-off to the LH cylinder, start the engine and point the strobe at the pointer. After warming the engine a bit, rev it to 3500rpm and watch if the mark lines up. If it does, remove the pointer and button it all up, you're finished. If it don't, loosen the ignition back plate and adjust accordingly and repeat the strobe procedure until it does. Easy, innit?
You need to rev to 3500 in order to reach full advance, it is here that the ig. timing must be set. On curve #1 this comes in at 3000, all other curves reach full advance at higher revs. Once you've got this basic set-up, you can switch around the curves as you like without disturbing the basic adjustment. Curve #7 is a nice curve to begin with on a stock engine.....
