It looks to me the later unit was cheaper to manufacture, I would think performance should be similar

Lee is spot on. See the left one has bent tubes, the other one straight ones that are just welded together in angles. Both are crap though, maybe the later one more than the original one...
Take a look from the side with the 3 pipes and look to the end of the collector. You will see a lot of edges, potentially even that the two tubes at the end of the collector protrude into the big collector tube - not good! Also - at least on my Keihan collector - the tube did not have the right volume. at high revs, it turned bright gleaming red...
compare what you see with the picture below. the closer you get to this, the better the collector is at this area:
