Filler cap lock is getting a bit sticky, so I've cleaned it out with contact cleaner spray.  Lot of crap came out, but I need to lube the mechanism now- what's the best thing- don't want the key breaking off!

Probably graphite would be best, grease based lubricants attract dirt. I've used silicone spray too, works ok if done on a semi regular basis.

Got some Abus padlock lube off ebay- guess that will work OK.  Dunno if I'd use it on an ignition barrel though.

I've used Mintex Ceratec to good effect in the bootlid lock barrels on the cars as they usually pick up all the road crud over winter.
Seems to work fine on brake pistons and slides without picking up too much.

It is also very cheap :D

Fill the tank to the brim, go out for a ride and hit the brake hard... lock will be nicely lubed with petrol. :D  And anything you previously applied will be washed out.

You have a lock on your filler cap?  :o

As do all RGS filler caps. :D

I fit lockable caps on my bikes that find use with tankbags, no longer open up as soon as the bag is filled.

I read somewhere that WD40 goes a bit gummy after a while in locks.  Dunno if this is true.

Well anyway, there's a wee can of Abus lock lube on its way to me and Piet is probably right about the fuel washing away anything inside, but the mechanism had definitely got stiffer recently (fnarrrr....)

Yup, I think a few tanks breathe unintentionally through the locking cap's lock!
