Float heights

I am checking float heights on a 77 3CL. However but it not clear from the various sources as to whether the height is measured with the spring loaded plunger in the float needle compressed or relaxed.

If I measure the height when the carb is on its intake face as per the dellorto instructions. If the needle is just seated with the plunger spring relaxed the float heights at approx 22mm.

If the plunger is fully depressed within the  float needle  then I get the recommended 18mm.

In order to achieve 18mm with the needles just seated and no compression of the plunger  spring the tangs have to be bent by a fair amount which does not look right.

Any pointers would br gratefully recieved.

The 18mm refer to the position at the moment
of closing.
I check it like shown in the picture, blowing
into the end of the hose. You can feel and
hear it.

Thanks. Looks like it's time to  get bending tangs. This might explain the hestitancy/stalling on initial throttle opening.

I've come across 2 reasons the tang has to be over bent.

2 fiber washers under the needle valve and seat. They can be very hard to get out and have taken one out then found another under it looks like it was stuck there for years.

A batch of the needle valve and seats from Dellorto had a different body hight (went over it with Wolfgang) so when mounted the plunder was a bout 1.5mm higher. There for the big bend in the tang.

If you have to put a large bend in the tang double check the opening as the bottoms need a tweak so the don't catch and let the valve fully open.

Jug-s thanks for the pointer. I had replaced the washes. However when compared the the old washers which luckily I had kept they were about three times as thick! Putting the old washers back brought the floats into a much more normal position. One to watch out for in future...
