Fork Movement

I am halfway through doing the fork seals on my 3C. I have the new 2 off seals in the right leg of my Cer fork, its all back together but I haven't added the oil yet. So with them fully assembled I have noticed the leg with the new seals has an 1/8 of an inch up and down play. The other leg has oil and hasn't been done but it has no free play at all. I am pretty sure the bottom bolt is tight and I gave the leg a good wack with a rubber mallet so I think it up against the damping rod. Any tips on where this movement is coming from. I didnt try moving the damping rod before assembly. I would have thought the spring would hold the damping rod down hard and with the lower bolt tight there would be no play? What am I missing here

Vince, there is this small spring below the damper pistons, which comes into action when the fork leg is pulled out to the max. Might be the reason for the free play you can feel with no oil in?

First ...... does the play have a springy feel? If so then that is likely normal. If it doesn't then perhaps you forgot the damping rod topping spring (about an inch long).
Alternatively .... something is not seated right inside. I've done similar with other types of forks. There is a cup at the bottom that the damping rod sits in and if it isn't seated correctly then you won't be able to tighten all the way.

Just one of many possibilities ......... take it apart and assemble it again!

Yes it had a spring like quality, topout spring. All good.
I was kinda dreading doing this but as usual thinking about it was way worse than doing it. The 8 bolt front guard was the worst bit from last time but that was the time I fitted the grommet spacers and that was a long way from fun. They had settled in so it was easy.
