I just spoke with the person entrusted to grit blast and powder coat my SF2 frame and swing arm. No joy. Whatever both the frame and swing arm have been coated with, does not respond to sand/grit blasting at all. To my knowledge, the frame has been under a house for the past 25 years and has not been refinished. Judging from the visibility of the VIN, the coating is quite thick, and feels quite " plastic".
Is this a common problem, did the factory apply a plastic type coating, or has someone already had a go at re coating the frame and swing arm?
HELP!

Stanley Victoria ................ sooo jealous.

Blasters will get that off, what's he medium is he using? I've had heaps of PC blasted off. Factory didn't use PC, only paint.

Maybe Plastidip, wife uses it for the boss anchors at the archery club.

If it's been properly primed it's a sod to remove but I suppose that's the point.

AFAIK, factory never used anything else than paint for the frames (with the exception of the 750 SFC that was zinc plated to my knowledge).

So - if its something different than paint, it has been applied after bike was delivered.

Most blast media bounces off powder coat, the other thing to consider is if they are having to blast the shit out of it they are also eroding the freshly exposed steel. Take it to your local furniture stripper and get them to dip it, will lift off most of the coating, the frame will then need a light blast to prep for whatever you decide to put on it next.
SFC 750 frames were indeed zinc plated.

I used to get a lot of powder coat done and often parts would need to be stripped and re -done.. As Keith has said the parts were dipped and stripped and the powder coaters had the facilities to do this so it may be worth asking a powder coater in your area ?

I use the nearly local Aircraft guy to strip the paint off delicate or hard to remove stuff. The chemical clean for tank, plastics, brake parts etc is just brilliant.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I'm trying a new sandblaster who will then powdercoat after priming. He seems to think that the medium that he uses will move the PC. If not, there's a paint stripping guy at Bandiana with a big enough tank to fit my frame. I've just got to find out who he is and where.
Again, thanks to all for your comments.

I stripped my powder coated frame with paint stripper that was methylene chloride based. Worked a treat. Sand blasting is too coarse for my liking, etching metal as well.
Also was able to do it at home so my frame wasn't in the hands of any dickhead who does shit you have no control over. Once had my SF2 frame sandblasted and painted back in the 70s.
When I went to refit the rear guard it didn't line up with any of the mounting tabs, the rear hoop section was bent down, looks like it was dropped on it probably from being hanged from the steering head for blasting/painting. What I've learned from that was don't trust anyone with your goods if you can avoid it.
