FUEL /IGN on Laverda

Soo...

Excuse a Newbie

But Has Anyone done a Mega/Microsquirt (or other kind of)  adaption ( Fuel and ign ) on a Lav 1000/1200 yet ?

I'm in progress of Doing just that , since I'm in the 180 deg "mob", I Don't see a lot of problem due to the  1,3 cyl  works as "one" ,using squirt 2times/rev and firing on "top" , since Microsquirt Do have 2 ign channels and  2 "Fuelbankchannels" plus revlimit is about 8000 it shouldn't bee any major problems, "at least not on papper"  ::)
hrm, It would bee perfect for any 2 cyl also...
But It would bee nice to get some info from anyone ,that done it, and possibly learn ,before mistake!

( Mee an My projects, sigh! )

Well I could give you a ride impression, but I knocked back the offer of a ride on the only fuel injected Laverda in the world.Regret doing that a lot.Thought I might be tempted in owning the 2nd fuel Injected Laverda in the world and the first 180.Bin down a few to many Laverda rabbit holes by then so I stupidly said no.

How quickly the Zane Laverdas are forgotten. :o

Timing your fuel injection with the wasted spark ignition signal will give a squirt at the right time just as the intake valve is opening, but will also give another squirt on the combustion stroke, at which time the intake flow stream is relatively stagnant. But it'll eventually find its way into the cylinder. I don't know how else you'd do it with a crank speed trigger though.

While squirting a gulp of fuel down the inlet tract while the valve is open is optimal, un-timed fuel injection still works OK. My old Kawasaki 1300 (6 cylinders) has fuel injection, but it's a pretty crude system. All injectors squirt together (dunno how many squirts per revolution), so some cylinders may be timed OK while others are miles out. The bike still runs OK.

Well ,I'l try , It Couldnt be worse the the old worn 32mm carbs

And I Do get a "up to date" "Coil near plug" Ignition in the Micro box

Next things is to investigate and get hold of some good injectors, maybe from a Ducati 900- 1000 cc , and fuel pump, and TPS ,,small light stuff...

Anyway Its a good start with this stuff

Hi SSDD,

As per the link above I have successfully injected my RGA (120 degree).  My system has full 'sequential' control of fuel and spark, I have cylinder-by-cylinder control of fuel quantity as well as fuel pulse timing and spark timing, along with seemingly hundreds of other variables many of which are also adjustable dependent on gear ratio.  the amount of setup options are only really limited by your imagination and time.  It was a barrel of fun to set up, lots of challenges to stimulate the old brain.
As mentioned in my article, I was originally thinking to use the microsquirt but it was interminably delayed and I lost interest.  As I went down a different path I have not kept up with the 'squirt and do not know how they ended up.

There was a chap in New Zealand (Nick) who was putting a microsquirt system onto a breganze 750 but it sounds like the project stalled half way through and was offered for sale here a while back.

Cheers

Throttle body set up you have is not really suitable due to how they have been manufactured. Have a look at BMW k series throttle bodies they are individual and a lot easier to configure to the Laverda inlets. Got a box of stuff here as I have been meaning to set up an injection system for quite some years now just never seem to have the time.

what the hell happened to your combustion chambers ?
not a real clear photo but can see some very strange machining work on that head

Suzuki GSXR 600 fuel injection system is suitable as a donor, independent throttle bodies, easy to change centres

Hi Redax
Detonations?!??!

hehe
Sorry
well this was the "head nerby on the shelf" just used for checking spacing between intake runners.
This head is a "goner", with a cracked "ironskull", found by mee at a local shops bin ( complete with cams and all )

So I put on my "mill" and removed the iron , and I will blast it with glass and weld the chambers up again with "si/mg/al"
+ I want add on an extra 5 mm( sorry "inch Guys", 1/4 of an inch roughly )  on the gasket surface , to get an harder surface+ more material to rebuild the runners
see JPG of milling
that about the "mildly" reshaped conbustionchambers, ( actually raw alu after removing the ironskull)

BTW Injectorhousing ,  well This is also something got on the shelf in my "shed" , Actually this morning i rounded my good friend ,"the Ducatist" and made some mesarument on his  Injectors ,houses pumps and TPS and so on ,,BMW stuff should bee a good donor also,,,, I see a lot of time on EBAY searches in the nearby future..

Hi Steve

Thanks for Your reply and good article,
I know about the pro,s and con,s about seq injection ,, But This Microsquirtbox just lay here and collects dust and are proberly better then the old 32mm dellortos + that I get the ignition for free It just got 2 channels for ign , and 2 banks , + O2 sensor , and can manage the stepmotor for idle if needed,I dont' know if I need any more?

I do wounder , Did You get any problem with the Autronic fuelinj, due to "few" cogs ( ?!) on the trigger wheels , You used one for crank ,+ one for the cam or?

It seem to need a lot of cogs, type 36 -1 triggerwheel or it wount get any good/clean signal when cranking ( low speed ) due to the low weight of a Motorcycle crank, ( might be rocking back and fourth due to low mass ) and plus the fact IF you got a loose camchain  it wont get any more stabile,, anyway Just a tought.

I'm glad this thread got so many's attention , I will learn a lot  ( maybee spelling too ;)  )

( You have to excuse mee for my bad spelling and por English, I will get better .. (hopefully) )

For now
/Lars

Hi Lars,
Yes I use crank and cam sensors, and have gone through several iterations of both trying to improve it. :)  The slow-cranking when the motor is extremely cold and/or battery is marginal remains the only bug I still need to iron out of my system.  It's exactly as you say, the crank has low polar moment (compared to a car), so will change it's angular momentum a lot when going over each compression event.  I have a few small details that still need sorting out since I sort of stopped working on it once it was up and running and I started up again racing my SFC in 2010.  There's only so much time and money.  :)

Hi Steve

good to here  , well Money , time , no so much,    :o                    Projects ......

Just in the final stage of completing my "shed" , that has consumed alot  of .....

anyway now is the time to start and complete these good project your sole wants and has been wanting for the last 15 years , btw there one is,,,  hearing the sound of a high reving 180 in the summer night...

well down to things
I do want spread bit of info a good coil for use on Laverdas
The coils can be found as GM part number 12558948 (AC Delco D577), and can be found for around $20 each on the Internet or eBay

this coil is triggered by letting a 3V signal just for 5 millisec get a real blast, it does has a own ignitor so low current i sufficient
Check this out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SZAtr5V-dM
This should be the best way to get a god spark without using a mag ignition

Sheers
Lars
