Fuel sender unit

I have had my 1984 RGS for a year.  It had not been started for 10 years and now I have it running and roadworthy!
The fuel guage has been erratic with levels jumping from empty to full.  I took it out.  The resistance readings were all over the place, so I took it apart.  The rheostat has broken wires.  I tried an automotive unit but they read 20-90 ohms.  I think the Veglia unit reads around 20 to 200 ohms.  Has anybody found a replacement?  Has anybody tried rewinding those tiny wires?  Or should I just leave it disconnected so the dash gauge doesn't distract me?
Or am I being silly?

I the meantime, I found a universal adjustable fuel sender unit made by Autometer with the 20-250 ohm range, removed the old one and grafted the reostat and float arm on.  It cost about $40 U.S. and works but without the low fuel warning light.  I set it up so that it reads empty at about 1/8 tank and there are still the reserve settings on the petcocks if all else fails.
