Fuel tank de-rusting

I've been trying to find Deox-C in Australia. None of the usual suspects (hardware and paint shops) stock it or any equivalent product. I went to a car paint specialist and he told me that citric acid is used in the production of heroin, so its sale to the general public is now restricted to very small quantities - little packets as food additives can be bought in the supermarket. Also, buying phosophoric acid (an alternative rust remover) is getting to be a problem because it can be used in drugs and making sarin gas. You can only get it in dilute solutions (<35% concentration). Similarly, you can only buy dilute oxalic acid, not the crystalline stuff that I used to buy in tubs to clean my boat with.

You can't even buy cold medication at the chemist without showing your driver's licence and getting third degree. Apparently pseudoefedriene can be made into speed or some bloody drug.

For christs sake we've got terrorists buggering up air travel and now bloody druggies stuffing up our ability to buy odrinary stuff.

What next? Sorry sir, you can't have salt on your chips, sodium and chlorine can be used to make chemical weapons you know.

Fuck me!

I know what you mean Cam, I sent my 12 year old niece out the other day to buy a large Bowie knife, 20 Silk Cut, a bottle of gin and some rat poison and the manager of the local store wouldn't serve her. Bloody nanny state... I suppose I'm going to have get off my arse and buy my own condoms now, by the way, can you test them for me?

There is a company here in California that makes a citrus based rust solvent called "Rusteco". I bought a 5 gallon drum and used it on my Jota and 900SS tanks. Cleaned both spotlessly clean, and this stuff does not attack the metal. One way to permanently fix the problem after cleaning is to Caswell the inside of the tank.

Tried a couple hand fulls of very short drywall screws when I had to remove a failed tank lining on my Norton Commando. Scrubbed out the inside of the tank, and roughed it up also so a new coating of Caswell could adhere to the inside.

Spub, Did the Rusteco attack the paint at all?

somebody once suggested to use small ball bearings instead of gravel... is less messy and the rinsing is a lot easier because there is no granite dust in the tank

I've been comparing prices of Deox-C and citric acid (which is what Deox-C is)

In Australia:
1kg Deox-C = $56
1kg citric acid = $7.50

You can buy it on-line.

Here's a handy supplier of citric acid on Alibaba. Note the minimum order quantity  :o

Would anyone like to de-rust an aircraft carrier?
Cheers,
Cam

The Australian Navy has some other ships that are candidates:

I'm currently watching a Jap tank that is filled with cheap vinegar and shows promising results after 24 hours of being filled halfway. Today I topped the tank up and the middle hump inside the tank which had a good coat of surface rust washed clean as I filled the vinegar in, resulting in bare metal looking very good :D I suppose the condensation of the vinegar (filler opening sealed off) worked on the rust that is not submerged. I'm going to let the vinegar sit in the tank about 3 weeks and when everything has a greyish look I'll drain the vinegar and report back.

A friend has removed rust from 2 tanks this way and one is still in very good condition internally after 5 years of use, without additional coating.

Regards,
Gerald
