Fuel tap left on :(

Keith.

I never used to turn them off either. For some strange reason I am now obsessive about it.

Its a conspiracy, the fuel tap manufacturers want you to do it so you wear the mechanisms out and then they leak fuel and guess what? you got buy new ones! Bastards!

I would religiously turn mine off overnight, had a Bonnie wet sump with fuel once but it took some time to do that.Since fitting the Miks they now go off then the key gets turned off.Mark Muir told me it was a good idea so thats good enough for me.

You can buy a hell of a lot of fuel taps for the price of a full engine rebuild  :-X

I have had problems cause by the new white floats which I think are the only ones you can buy for Dells. They stick by swelling slightly and when they are dropped down such as when the  bike runs out of fuel, they don't rise up. At a petrol station one time, as I was filling the tank, fuel was gushing out of the carbs...a jolt off the stand sorted it.But Keith spotted the whites were in there and junked them for blacks.no problems since....though Keith does set up the carbs so that you do have to get the bugger warm before it will idle.when warm it is a peach, so I now resist trying to adjust it for earlier idle.

It is interesting. Years back, I regularly used to forget to turn the taps off and never had a problem, either with hydraulic lock or fuel ending up in the sump.

But recently, I left the taps on and didn't ride the bike for a while and, bingo, 2 litres of gas in the sump. (You sold a gearbox seal off the back of the problem.)

I think it might be modern fuel gumming up the float valves just enough to cause a leak when left standing.

Maybe your carbs are squeaky clean?

Might not be the Keith you are thinking of...

Says you! How do you know who I buys my seals off've eh, eh?  ;)

You're right of course. And it's not really interesting. A bit sad really. Just passing the time 'til I wander down to the market and continue my cafe society life of leisure!

Checked the bike tonight and it looks like it's ok.  The taps were only on reserve for a few minutes so I was probably panicking a bit. Fresh fuel in tank and charged battery so will go for firing up either tomorrow or Saturday.  I've just had a major op so my time working on the bike is dictated by energy and health! I will let you know how I get on meantime thanks for the help and advice. Cheers, Andy77Jota

Ok she fired up today without issue and I let her run for a few minutes on choke. However when I eased the choke off she cut out and has refused to start again since. I reckon a new battery is required but I will get to the bottom if it when I'm fit and able again.  It was great to hear her running and can't wait til I can have a ride on the wonderful Perthshire roads. Thanks again for all the advice. Andy

Oh dear.  Not sure why you opted to do that.  Would have been far better to have ridden off to avoid cold fouling, pushing the choke off as you went.  If you weren't able to do that, then at least warm her up on the throttle, again pushing the choke off asap - it's usually only required for starting with Dell'Orto carbs.

Suggest you fit a set of new plugs.

Yep, bang the choke off asap or it'll foul, and the chances of recovering the plug are slim.

Sadly I can't ride it until the end of May due to recent major heart surgery :o
So meantime I am going to replace the battery as it is tired and isn't holding charge well and this  will improve things ten fold.  As I started my biking career the year my Jota was built I am familiar with differing choke use and I actually did as you advised above, but she still died.  Cheers for now, Andy

New battery fitted today, along with new B8ES plugs and she fired first press of the button :D. Choke straight off and warmed her up, then let her idle for a while. The bike is a sweet runner and I'm a very happy man. Thanks for the advice and help. Andy
