Gaskets

Guys,

For my Laverda I have 2 sets of gaskets and would always use them. I have another motorcycle gasket requirement for which it will take a not insignificant time interval to procure...In short I would have to wait blinkin ages for it.

The gasket in question is to seal a small plate holding the crank case breather outlet on the top of the crank case. I believe looking at the arrangement that it really only sees oil mist in that area.

My question is this. Is it a bodge to use a thin smear of wellseal instant gasket ? I have heard some knowledgeable fellas state that this is perfectly acceptable providing you dont over apply and are scrupulously clean when prepping.

I won't bodge it..I'd rather wait if I have to...

what about getting a sheet of gasket paper and making one yourself?

I'll have a closer look at the plate itself. My friend has a set of punches for making the bolt holes. I'd do that first before cutting it out.

Hmmm good idea...

I'm still wondering if the instant gasket is frowned upon by engineers or acceptable.

cheers

But is using a thin smear of instant gasket like Wellseal a bodge ?

Maybe, maybe not... :D

If the surfaces are dead flat and the plate of substantial thickness, you might well get away with it.  If it's already warped or makes the impression it will buckle under tightening pressure, it might be wiser to cut a gasket from cork sheet or soft gasket paper, smear it with gasket goo and carefully button it down.

Depending on motor, crankcase pressure can be quite evident and the slightest of leaks will have oil mist all over the joint.

Joe - i'm not following this thread very clearly - Why not just purchase the proper gasket? - Keith must have about 100 of them - as they were in the stuff i sold him - by all means smear some compound on it whilst you wait a couple of days for proper gasket - Regards - Phil

Hi Phil,

The gasket isn't for my Jota ( I have 2 sets for her ) ..It's for my MV project. I am upgrading the cooling system. To gain access to the water manifold bolts I had to remove this engine breather plate.
The problem with MV parts is that there is not the luxury of parts houses like Motalia and the dealers keep nothing in stock and MotoGb are lets say interesting people to deal with.
I take on board previous poster that crankcase pressure could result in oil spray if the job isn't done right so I'll order oe gasket from USA dealers as the US importers seem to be more serious in their approach.

I do appreciate your advice fellas . Thank you : )

This afternoon I am taking the JOta out of the garage to remount the horn which dropped off at Baskerville Hall...and get the multimeter out on a few glitches in the wiring..She's still my favourite bike by far : )

The Morini 500's used instant gasket on most joints I think. (going from memory)

Thank you Phil, Not much about me makes sense it has to be said !

I do respect the advice of the technical department on this here forum highly...: )

Thank you !

I ordered one in Massachusetts USA...

Funny old world innit !

Overheating due to the OE undersized water pump ?

Well where do we start !

The F4 has two water rads and an oil intercooler.  There are two problems one is cracking in the top rad due to the combined weight of the double assembly pulling on the top edge and top galleries of the rad cracking it. The second is overheating when stuck in traffic.

The F4s don't overheat when on the move..which is what they are meant for but in this modern world as we all know there is always the chance of getting caught on a hot day in a long tail back.

The intercooler is in the opinion of the sage and worldly..rubbish...It receives cooled water which is then streamed through the intercooler to cool the oil. This by now hot water is then fed to the water manifold cooling the cylinder head..not the best thing hot water back into the head.

The fixes..upgrade the waterpump as you have astutely spotted : )...and upgrade to 2010 spec which has a single  water rad and a proper oil cooler dispensing with the intercooler and about 5 miles of plumbing !

So that's what I am up to..

but right now I'm going out to work on my Jota ...  : )

Hi Joe,

It really isn't a big deal to cut some Nebar (rubberised cork) in to the correct shape, especially if your mate has some wad punches.
Nebar sheet can most probably be sourced from your friendly local gasket supplier like: http://www.sampsons.co.uk/CorkJointing.htm.
The head office and factory is at Wakefield - West Yorkshire: http://www.sampsons.co.uk/ContactUs.htm
Then you can knock out dozens for all your other MV mates for not much money.

Joe,

In-line 4s generally don't generate much crankcase pressure, especially while they're healthy.  Once wear sets in, blow-by can be a problem at high revs, but by then your gasket will have hopefully arrived from the US of A. :D

As Piet said if the plate is flat and fairly thick and the sealing area is 4mm or wider using some 3Bond or Permatex Ultra Gray should seal it just fine. I use it all the time on Honda cars for the timing covers on the S2000's and Civics with nary a leak.

Thanks to all you fellas for your guidance..Learning all the time...Very good of you especially as it's another marque ; )

A buddy of mine in the States is sending me over the correct gasket so it will be here in a week. If it wasn't for this then armed with the knowledge you have shared I would be confident to apply a smear of gasket seal on there and not worry at all.

You're right about the low crankcase pressure on an inline 4 as there was no oil at all on the inside face of the cover..clean as a whistle...It's kind of baffled from the crankcase proper by the way the casting is formed.

Now ..back to my Jota..jobs to do : )
