Gear back-lash

Have got the primary drive chain off and while fiddling and out of curiosity, I engaged first gear and rotated the clutch drum and found that it rotated approx 90 degrees before the slack was taken up to the output sprocket. Bit surprised there was so much slack, is this normal?

It's not the backlash in the gears you're observing. It's the rotational clearance between the dogs and the holes in the sides of the gears that they engage into.
