gear change horizontal play

scratching my head here ???

how much horizontal, as in in and out play should there be in the gear change shaft, at the gear lever - I'm sure it all went back together right as per the green book but I have a full 2mm of movement!

There always are two spacers on the gear change shaft, one between shaft and gearchange housing and another between shaft and cover. Usually when you remove the cover, the upper spacer will stick to the cover and fall off later..

I had both the spacers marked as 13 here

and am sure they when back right.

Very often there is also a spacer here, same thickness as the one on the other side.

Gears seem ok so far, I haven't done more than a handfull of miles since I put it back on the road, I need to work my way through a bag of Jets after changing to open trumpets this year.

2mm.. no your right it doesnt sound a lot but it is the thickness of the selector arm

That's nothing compared to the maybe 20 mm of the ratchet on the end of the selector drum.

Maybe the most important thing is that the gear lever and shim can stop the O ring in the cover popping out!

I shall just keep an eye on it for now then, take a closer look next time I drop the cover off.

thanks Paul, Marnix

Haven't found any reference to it in any manuals.  Reckon it should be kept to a minimum without having the shaft binding.  Excessive play can lead to the shift return spring turning/twisting on its locating tabs and effectivly blocking gear lever movement. About 1mm float in total should do the trick.  Very important to have a washer each side of said spring.

Piet, thanks for that. I will have to drop the cover off but I'm sure I only have the washers as per marked in the post from Marnix

to nice here today for cleaning them, I have been doing my best to get mine dirty and fly speckled.  8)
