Gen light on when put lights on

Hi

While out on the 3cl today the gen light came on when I put the lights on and there wasn't enough charge to power the indicators. Switched the lights off and the gen light went out and the indicators worked ok.
Any advice on where to start first?

Cheers
Peter

For anything even remotely related to the charging system my first port of call is the reg/rec. Not that I know shit about a 3CL so things might be entirely different on them.

Is your GEN light wired in with a modern voltage regulator to come on with the key and go out with the engine running?

Most Laverda GEN lights are inoperative from the factory..don't know about the 3CL.

Sounds like the battery voltage is low or an electrical fault..

Seeing as how I'm working this evening thought I may as well put my humble opinion in. Think I would check the battery before anything else,a) it's easy to do and b) it's easy to do!  Stuart

Hi Rusty Spokes

It looks like it's still on the original regulator/rectifier. The light stays off when the ignition is turned on and stays off while the bike is running. Only illuminating when I turn the lights on. The battery seems to have plenty of charge when starting and the engine runs fine.  Good idea to get them tested before spending money... Thanks Jarama 79

To be honest if your battery is good and you cant run the indicators with he lights on you have a major short i would say. Even more so if you have the 100amps+ needed to spin the starter ? First thing to do is put a volt meter across the battery check voltage with ignition on, running no lights and running with lights. Then put lights on engine off and try starter, its just a process of elimination or in the case of lights  illumination  :D

Checked the book..the GEN light should not be powered up..it is grounded though..so..could be some wiring issues..it may be the dreaded previous owner (DPO) plugged wires into a socket in the headlamp shell without knowing exactly what did what.

A VOM and test lamp would be a Christmas gift..if you don't have them..just use the wiring diagram and go hunting.

Laverda wiring is not the most logical and can be confusing..be patient and slowly the wiring will make sense. Take pictures/notes and try not and get several wires unplugged without knowing where they went, remembering they may be misplaced too by the DPO.

Be sure all the grounds are good..in particular the big battery ground. The battery ground will get hot/warm to touch when cranking the engine over if it has some resistance...change it if there is any doubt. Use an suitable auto parts store heavy ridding lawnmower ground and save the original for the comfort of the rivet counters.

Be sure your battery is healthy and fully charged. Check the voltage with the engine running with your VOM.

Here is a wiring diagram from our friends over at Laverdamania.

Let us know how it goes and do have a Merry Christmas!

Opps..the GEN bulb is powered up 12v on the ignition circuit 15..with no ground leg..it is not grounded. (I was wrong)

If the voltage regulator had an output for a GEN light  it would connect on the other side of the bulb..any low voltage output or overcharge would illuminate the bulb as overcharge or no-charge voltage crosses the bulb.

I made that mistake with my Mirage a while ago: thought it was coming on at night when the lights were on and using more power than the alternator could provide (series 1) until I discovered the bulb wasn't really connected to anything.. It was just excess light from the instrument backlight shining up the gen light holder tube...  :-[.  You're right tho, if connected to the spare white lead on the rectifier (some jap/aftermarket ones do have them) then it will function as a proper charge warning light (at least that what my local autosparkie says...)

Running with lights on with the original 3CL alternator will drain the battery. They do not have adequate output so if you do wish to run with your lights on you need to upgrade the alternator - Redax has the answer.

Some 180s had the gen light connected.
My 79 Jota light definitely did, and I have seen some others too recently, probably around the same era.

if your bike is a 180 series one with Bosch ignition (BTZ) and alternator,(which I suspect it is) then an "intermittent" charging light soon followed by a permanently on charging light will clearly indicate that the original (Bosch) regulator/rectifier is cattle trucked. They are no longer available new, get a replacement from "Electrexworld" but be sure to pay that little bit more money and get one which has the charge light enabled (cheaper units do not have this) and Electrexworld sell the cheap ones  as well. A small modification is required to the wiring if you go down that route, the replacement unit is supplied with some long tails, which require the connections crimping on to them to mate up to your existing loom, the quality if this work does have to be very high so if you attempt it, those connection must be very sound, pre-insulated crimped connectors will be of no use. In addition you will have to drill one extra hole in the mounting plate, this can be tricky since there is very little space to get an electric drill in to do the job, with everything still attached to the bike (desiralable). If an angled and cordless drill is available then you will have to trouble, luckily I have one, but without it, it will be a struggle and to fit it on a single bolt (instead of two) will be hopeless. The new unit needs to be suitable for this single phase DC alternator, Elexctrexworld will understand what you need.

An alternative is to source a working original Bosh unit, which I did recently from poxy coxy the short arsed shitter from Solihull (well actually, not all poxy, or a shitter or even any longer from Solihull, and a very good mate who I trust and  for a very long time, but I do like to extract the urine)

then you will continually get a flat battery, sooner or later, what you have now is the early warning signals, it will only get worse. Total failure is not far away.

Could well be wrong - but think that maybe the "Gen Light" is just a warning that the lights are on - the charging system is not up to running around With daytime lights on with the S1 180? triples. Use a 21w halogen pilot bulb - may be already fitted or explore LED alternatives - not sure how they pan out in current draw - but someone will know on this forum. Other way is not to use daytime lights - days are soon drawing out - so that will help  :D :D - Regards - Phil

If your referring to my post    "S1 TS 80-81, not sure. Can't justify spending money on another RR just for the light!!"      Then I'm not sure where your coming from Clem.
I don't or ever have had a charging problem with my S1 1200 except once about 25 years ago when the regulator packed up and I replaced it with a ducati unit and it worked perfectly with a operating charging light ever since. Now done over 170,000 kays, with the original BTZ system.
On the recent rebuild I upgraded to Sachse ign and kawasaki alternator which required fitting the RR, which doesn't have the charging light function. As I said, I can't justify spending money on another RR for the simple reason of having the charging light function. I will when the current one packs up. When I made the new simplified wiring harness I even included an extra wire and red led light in the instrument panel just in case I ever did have the charging light option.
