Generator bearings

I'm just about to get new bearings for my genny refurb. Orininal bearings (well, the ones fitted now) were non sealed type.
I wonder why this is?

So they could be cleaned and lubed every now and then... was probably a couple of pennies cheaper as well.    Doesn't happen in real life, just replace them with sealed ones and be happy.

Yes, put sealed ones in. That's what I did this summer.
Humidity does get into the outer bearing which nobody is going to grease regularly.
