Hi can anyone recommend a good replacement headlamp unit. It?s a 6 1/2?. In upgrade to something decent would be brilliant. Thanks

For which Laverda?  ???

6.5" makes it 165mm.  500 has 150mm lens diametre, early GT/S/SF Bosch headlight has 160mm, CEV is 170mm, later Bosch 180mm...

Thanks Piet, Laverda have headlights in mm as you rightly point out.
If the conversion comes out at 200mm though, there will be lots of interest all of a sudden.

I shall never upgrade my original Laverda lights, I can't see much at night anyway.

I forgot the Chott and LH models... 145mm from memory.  The tiddlers have 105-130mm, but running on 6V, these are rather marginal.  Then there were the LZs and LBs with a mix of round and rectangular in various sizes.

If reflectors and lens are in good order, I've found all later Laverda headlights to be quite satisfactory.  Deficiancies are usually down to voltage loss somewhere in the switchgear or wiring loom and connections.

Even a 220mm motherfucker headlight will be dim as a candle if only 10V arrives at the bulb. ::)

200mm into 6.5"? With a hammer, maybe... :D

With Piet, check the voltage coming to the bulp first. I bet it is below 10V... You can easily cure it with 2 relays, one for low and one for high beam. Get a decent new direct cable from the battery to the relays, a decent ground connection for the relay and use the former power-supplies of the bulp only as the switch signals for the relay.

If that isn't enough, get a bulp with more light output and check the bulp-plug for corrosion.

If reflector, lense and bulp are in good condition and you get more than 12V to the lamp, the headlight should be bright enough.

all the best

FWIW my guess is that it is a 180 measured incorrectly. In it's day was possibly the best m/c headlight going round. Better than some of the lights available on cars and certainly left my 900 Kwaka in the dark, pun intended.

Thanks for the responses chaps. Sorry forgot to mention I have a 500 so therefore I assume I have measure it wrong as it is suggested the headlight is. 150mm diameter. Same question though. The reason for the change is that my bike is an import and throws the dip beam the wrong way.

in that case, you should be good exchanging the lense/reflector unit.

Not sure where you live but if it is a country with traffic on the wrong left side of the rode, there is plenty in the aftermarket sector. 146mm should fit in that case:

Can't remember what size my SF1 had but pretty sure a std car insert would fit (6 1/2 inch? 7 inch? eg from a 70s Volvo ... even old Holdens and Falcons in Oz!). Later fitted a Kwaka Z1 or Z1000 shell.

I swear by Bosch H4s run with a relay (essential) and a 55/100w H4 globe.

I've been looking at a 25w/25w Led replacement for H4 which will fit into the OEM headlight c/w heatsink and driver. About $200 au for a pair (not sold individually). When the money is there...
