Just striped down the 1200 space frame engine after throwing a rod at spa last year the damage is very bad to the crank case,s,will post photos. How ever i have a set of late TS crank case,s every thing seems to match any prombles with swapping all my internals into these plus all the standard covers etc,any advice greatly appreciated

Rufus,

I expect I am going to state the really obvious....

If the cases are RH ignition (as you sit on the bike), not a problem. If they are really late (series 2) you will need the series 2 crank (or at least need to swap the crank ends). Also, for series 2 cases, you probably need the crank spider for the primary side and the primary cover/ignition ND generator etc.

I encountered this problem in reverse, when I needed new crankcases for a series 2 Jota. It was too much hassle to convert to series 1 cases, so I waited a year to find the right ones.

As I said above, if they are late series 1 cases - no problem.

Am assuming you mean MkII, should fit OK Rufus but will take a bit of adapting.

The MkI primary cover is not an exact fit at the rear bottom, near where the 120 gearshift exits, so you would need to use the MkII primary cover.  Could blank off the ignition compartment and sacrifice the outrigger bearing, or swap the crank end and use MkII ignition.  MkI alternator, starter drive and housing will fit the MkII cases.  It's been done before, just recently overhauled a crank with both MkI and II crank ends...  MkII outer covers are getting scarce and very expensive in case of a tumble.

Only "MkII" crank that is different and will not fit without serious mods is the 120 because of the altered and wider centre mains.

Piet,

Understand that you are saying it's possible, but it just isn't worth the bother when series 1 cases are so readily available for reasonable money....

Series 1 cases are a much cheaper option and less trouble + the series 2 cases are probably worth much more as spares for a series 2 triple...

If anyone's got an S2 primary chaincase - 120 or 180 degree in almost any condition at sensible money - i can swap ray his S2 cases for my spare S1 cases. If thet were my cases I would fill in the lower part of the S2 crankcases on the chaincase side with weld to convert for use with S1 parts. - Regards - Phil

2 things Ray,

I advise repairing the crank before swapping engine internals.

Secondly, I think it's the fag end in the crankcase that's responsible for the breakage.

Hope that's of some use.

Best regards
Paul

I think I can see fag ends in four out the six photos! I'm wondering if Ray is trying to create a smoker -friendly version of 'Where's Wally'...

Ray, I have a 1000 bottom end that looks better than that one in leboncoin.
Similar state of undress though.
I could let it go for 250 euros. I can even get it to the south of England relatively economically.
PM me if interested.

Many thanks to every one who replied, things have now been sorted out by a wee chap in Scotland, who,s name will be all over my bike hopefully see you all at Linden ,again many thanks to every one ,Ray.

Well done Ray, glad to see you're making progress. Have you sorted the barrels too. Dont forget to check out the rest of the motor, otherwise you get stumped for parts in the last week.

PS, Make sure you head for Lydden, it's a lot closer than New Jersey and yes hope to see you there, with your bike will be superb, good luck.
Rob

It should look like this     BHR Unlimited pre72 race at Lydden Hill
