We had one of the blokes arrive at last nights club meet with a Sprag clutch issue. The usual with 120s,one of the other blokes has a Howdi unit in his SFC.Years ago Mr Howdi turned up at another club night with his at that time newly finished unit for 120s.It looked very well made and super strong. We were all impressed.A couple of years later we hear he stopped making them with whispers of some big problems.Has anyone seen what happened to them.No one last night know what happened to these units, other than the one in use for 40k,fitted before he bought the bike.

Hi Vince,

I bought two Howdi clutch units (one for the RGA, one for the RGS) and both of them broke at around 30,000 kms. Howdi returned all my money + some on top to strip the engines of the broken sprags. Howdi claimed to have been supplied with faulty bearings.

I'm surprised that a unit has lasted 40,000 kms and would advise the owner to replace the bearing asap (simple job) or better still convert back to a standard setup.

My view is that while the idea was good and the product well made insufficient R&D had gone in to it - just their luck that they sold it to someone using their bike every day and covering 40,000 kms per annum.

Nick :-)

Thanks for the info Nick, will tell the owner as soon as he and his GS BMW gets back from Murmansk. That is IF he gets back.
