IIS ignition problem (mea culpa)

My IIS ignitioned Motodd was running great on the way out to the hot rod show this am. When we left I figured we'd take the long way home via the Puhoi pub. Not far on that leg of the ride the bike lost power, felt like it ran on 2 (but was actually running on 3). I limped home and (irately) started looking for the cause. Bike felt like it was running retarded (timing). On the way home I was thinking 'who's been fiddling with this bike'? Answer was of course - me. Last thing I'd worked on was rebuilding the sprag clutch.
Pulled the rotor off and found the edge of the rotor had guilotined the wires going to the terminal on the IIS ign pickups. I must have reinstalled ign with wires too close.

It's all fixable. Amazing to me that it held together enough to limp home. Must have been running fully retarded.

Sharing the problem and reminding other IIS users to take more care than me. Advice welcomed (like stick to your day job Andre).

Off to the pub now. Will fix the wiring (with help from a professional) during the week

Will have to ride the SFC1000 to watch the Formula 5000 racing tomorrow.

Regards, Andre

Andre,
I do have some IIS spares in stock if you ever need something.
Not many spares though.

Cam. Thanks for the sympathy. A backup plan is always good. My wifes away, there's lots of classic car and bike racing on here now, and my younger daughter wants me to take her away for a weekend on the SFC for the first time ever (on the SFC). It's tough. We mustn't weaken.

I was one-upped by a guy recently who I was talking to about buying a car (BMW E30 325 manual). His 'other' car was a 2004 M3 supercharged.

Cheers

Andre,
I looked at my IIS stockpile today and I can supply you with a brand new wiring harness for the trigger output.
You have our e-mail address, is up to you.

Andre do yourself a favour and junk it before it leaves you on the side of the road like mine did in my SFC1K, the magnets in mine started to fail in the rotor not sure if thats what was the final issue creating unreliability but just the fact that parts are almost extinct I changed over to Sachse not much cost but assured reliability.
Pity I blew up the top end of the motor :( :( :( :( :( :(

Thanks Red. I'll try to fix here. The model IIS I have has the wires from pickups hardwired to the main box thingy.
Maurice - yes I understand the ignition might be on last legs. Was working great if not for owner efforts... Carbs are current top priority.

Cheers

Andre,

The plugs that IIS used are all easily available.  The encoder end is a very standard connector called a Molex KK Interconnect, pitch 2.54mm (0.100") and the control box is a DB25.  Making off the KK pins properly basically does require the correct crimping tool (horrendously expensive) so I would recommend to at least get this bit done by someone electronically oriented.
If repairing just the encoder wire, given the damage you have is in an awkward place to make a repair, get a new encoder plug and wire made up and make the join somewhere with more space like under the airbox.  With good soldering and insulation a reliable repair could be made.
Better would be to replace the whole wire, but as John generally tended to pot the DB25 connections in silicon for extra vibration resistance it makes it awkward to just replace the one wire.  At that stage I would just make an entire new loom using yours as a reference.

Cheers

I was wrong, you were right - the wires from the encoder to the box are replacable and would be better than the repaired ones I have. If I'd just looked properly. If available, please sent over. I'll follow this up by email.

Steve B. Thanks the reply. Reinforced what Red (politely) tried to suggest

Thanks

The mention of IIS ignition has me wondering, what happened to John Wilson the maker of the IIS? Don't think I have seen him post on this or the old Laverda forum in a long, long time???

His ignition is without a doubt the best one ever made for Laverda's. I am very lucky to have three of them on my bikes.

John is still alive, Maxene speaks to him on a regular basis.
Life has become too difficult for him and he has all but withdrawn from the human race.
He does not stay in contact with very many people at all right now.
But he is healthy and going okay.

That reminds me; I still have 50 or 60 of the tiny wee connectors that fit inside the Molex plug for the IIS.  You do need a special crimper to do them properly I think, but I can send them out 5 or 6 at a time for a stamped addressed envelope if anyone needs some.  Otherwise they come in packs of 100.
