This is a recent comment made on this site on FaceBook. Some interesting stuff being posted. The site owner is building a programmable ignition and data logging system that is controlled by a mobile phone app and allows real-time while riding data acquisition or so I can get from the marketing stuff.

I know firing plugs, the actual High voltage side takes good design. Why nearly every major Motorsport category F1, Nascar, Oz Supercars, drag bikes & cars, nearly every ECU vendor uses a system designed in Sydney by M&W Ignitions, Mark Boxsell, formally of Bishop Innovation. The energy sent to the plug depends on compression ratio, excess energy just wears out the plugs. It is the spark and ionisation that creates the radicals needed for combustion, combustion needs the reaction products of combustion to start, kind of a catch 22.
