Well I?ve finally discovered some daft advice in the green book...?don?t let the chain run off the engine sprocket, whatever you do!?
Surely there must be some old sage out there with a trick up his sleeve for fitting a brand new chain following engine removal?
Cheers

If you can get it onto the top teeth of the sprocket you should be able to crank the engine by hand with it in gear, thus rotating the chain through. Probably need something to hook it as it comes around underneath.

It requires patience, perseverance and inginuity. ???
From a metal coat hanger make a hook to go into the rivit pin hole.  Feed inwards while rotating the sprocket using either of the crankshaft nuts.  It will catch, feed around the sprocket and then you can pull it out.
Have the charity swearbox beside you will doing this.

seasoned engine rebuilders do not fit the inner or outer gearbox covers until the unit is re-installed in the chassis, some also do the same the the primary drive/clutch etc. Professional engine rebuilders fit the inner and outer gearbox covers only finger tight for transportation, for when an owner is re-installing the unit in the chassis themselves.
