Large head gasket surface -- first year?

Do you mean the larger surface area on the head where the gasket sits?
My guess would be around 1979 or 1980. Certainly the heads up to around 1977 had the smaller surface area.

The larger gasket face came in with the 1977 model year all alloy head ( no iron skulls ) got one here stamped December 76. So the last model year with the small gasket face was 1976.

My 3CL and has the small gasket face. The left one on the picture.
The bike was registered May 1977, but maybe was built in 1976?

Should be a date stamp on the head, month then year. Looks like your later head has been machined on the squint. Got a couple of them here too, as far as I can see it was done at the factory as they measure up parallel and to the correct dimension just not true to the casting.

What does "on the squint" mean?

My 3CL is #5252, apparently an early 1977.  The only number stamped on the head is "106" (or, "901").  The barrel has an "86" (or, "98") stamped on a fin at the top - is that a date?  Both head & barrel have the large head gasket surface area.

I have a spare RGS head with  "6 82" - that must signify June of 1982 - right?

106 would be October 1976. Not sure if the date applies to when the part was cast or machined or taken off the shelf. As far as I know the model year ran from September to September, the factory probably implemented any changes they were making after the August break but that is just a guess, it always good to remember that it is not Honda we are dealing with, Moto Laverda were just some happy blokes in a big shed  ;)
