Hi
does anyone have an exploded view of the 38 mm M1r forks that was fitted to the SFC1000?
Need to get some spares and have to verify the partnumbers

Best regards
Kent

I recently sold a pair of 38mm M1R forks, but from the caliper mount positions it was not from a Laverda triple, more the size for an Alpino calipers and discs.

Rare? Nice to know - I have a pair ... but with threads for Brembo 08s, not unthreaded for Laverda Brembos.

It's a Marzocchi, they were all like that.

The early calipers had been phased out by the time the M1R hit the scene.

Not aware of a 38mm fork being fitted to the SFC1000, not even on the prototype that ended up in Lothars garage.  In early days, this bike had a 16" front wheel and the P4 calipers were mounted on adapters.  Sliders were later swapped to accept 08 Oros without adapters.

AfaIk, various versions of the M1R were fitted to several exclusive Italian lightweights.

Hence the spacers required to mount the front mudguard on the sliders.

Slight correction: The bike that was in my garage for a while and now belongs to Scott in the US was the Pre-Production bike built for Uwe Witt's friend and architect of his facility in Wesseling. It was the first ever Factory built 1000 SFC and the first ever dispatched bike. It carried the very uncommon frame number *0001*, as Uwe's friend had requested the first ever built bike. As the SFC is a variation of the RGS (Corsa if you will), frame numbers normally started like all bikes with 1001, not 0001. As 1001 was already in use, the only chance of symbolizing "first 1000 SFC ever built" was - 0001. So - Uwe called into the factory to discuss this and after a while (and as Uwe was pre-paying the first production run of the 1000 SFC...), he got the agreement for this very special frame number. This fact is confirmed by Uwe Witt and Piero Laverda.

Piero though tried to get me in contact with the owner of the prototype, who is a collector in Italy. Unfortunately, he did not want to sell and also - more so unfortunately... - had brought the bike to specs of the standard production 1000 SFC... means: he had changed the front wheel, seat unit, the colored instruments, footrest plates etc. ... not much left of the prototype...  (banghead). Wonder how a person that calls himself collector could do that, but hey - who am I to judge...  :-[ Piero wasn't even sure if the guy still has the original parts...

Maybe a start of the next book?  ::)

we (here in the UK) did have a pre-pro or proto SFC1000 with 16" front wheel and the bits that Lothar talks about, at the time (ie maybe a year later) it was thought that there were about 5 or 6 of these bikes with 16" front wheels which were being transported around for display puposes, certainly the one in the UK, did not do a hell of a lot of "travelling" and may (for all I know) have gone back to Italy, or was there just the one, now with a collector in Italy and changed to standard SFC1000 spec?

The same applies to the still born, 1000, Vee Twin Aprillia/Laverda proto, (which had the online styling competition that was totally ignored by Zane even though they declared a winner) I was told that there were several, but in fact was there even just the one? and if so what happened to it

CLEM

Clem,

according to my discussions with Piero Laverda, there was just one prototype built by Uwe Witt (basically an RGS Corsa with re-painted frame, a single seat shaped similar to the later production run with 2 seats, an altered RGS tank and with kind of "Jota style" rear sets) and one by the factory. The one built by the factory was sent around Europe for Promotion of the production run, it was the one with the colored instruments. Also, the 16" frontwheel was only on these 2 from factory side, as road tests showed significant issues with the combination and they went back to 18" on the front, too.

Don't know where these rumors always come from, but have you heared of one stating there was a V6 in Spain left behind from Laverda after a significant engine failure? Pure bullshit... No factory would left behind a prototype of a bike they want to use as a test-laboratory. How should they get results if they could not examin what actually failed?!?

Laverda typically only built one or two Prototypes, not series of (and for sure not 5 or 6...). That is only logically, as a) trade-shows where they present such a prototype are normally not all at the same week/weekend. There is time enough to send the bike around. Second point is, that if you use the bike for testrides, it makes more sense to use the SAME bike for testrides, as only that way you get comparable results.

So - to my best knowledge and according to Piero Laverdas e-mails to me, there was only 1 factory prototype for the 1000 SFC.

which one you mean? the Factory prototype or the Witt Prototype or the 0001-bike, please?  ;)

here is the press report about the factory prototype, but already with 18" frontwheel:

another one, same bike, same year and magazine; recognize the different top nuts for the fork and the top yoke with still the casting on it to take a handle-bar; the same top yoke was used on the 0001-bike; later production bikes had different top-nuts and top yokes:

Here is a picture of what could (!!!) be Witt's Prototype; see the pure single seat, the different footrests, the 3-1 exhaust hanger; still seams to have the 16" frontwheel! Pictures taken (I think) by Scott Potter in Italy during a Laverda meeting:

Two articles about the Witt prototype from 1984 can be found here:

Interestingly: the Witt Prototype showed 4-pot-calipers on the front - already in 1984!!!

next: some pics of the 0001-bike before I sold it to Scott S.

:D

It is. Also interesting what differences/modifications between the three and the production bikes were developed. Also the Witt- Prototype obviously now has a different bracket for the rear brake master than it had on the show, again different to the later production bikes. Other points are the different seat pads at the passanger seat cover and some minor other things.

Would love to own all three of them...  :D In addition to the Classic I sold... and my 1000 SFC.... and....  ::)

But then - will never happen... and also makes no sense... But imagine the picture of 5 different 1000 SFC's standing in a row, symbolizing the development... and an RGS Corsa.... and - as the V6 book states the 120? engines are a direct successor of the V6 - the V6... and...

just dreaming, sorry...  :-[
